Vivaldi 5.0: celebrating the fifth anniversary with a lot of news

Vivaldi 5.0 It is the new version of one of the most interesting web browsers on the scene and, as usual, it comes with different news that will interest different types of users. However, if you know it or use it, you will be wondering why the numbering jump and everything has its explanation, which in this case is reduced to the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the project.

Indeed, in Vivaldi they walk celebrating its fifth anniversary these days and although the previous version was 4.3, it seemed good to put a five to the version number to this so that everything is round, even when we are facing a more or less current launch of the browser. A browser, moreover, that of the customization options makes a flag. What’s new in Vivaldi 5.0? Let’s see it.

The great novelty of Vivaldi 5.0 is the new theme system, in which the existing tools are unified, the odd option is added and the functionality as a service is extended to the Vivaldi website, allowing creations to be shared with the rest of the browser users. In short, Vivaldi adopts a system similar to that of Firefox or Chrome.

Thus, on the one hand, the theme editor is integrated into its own module in the browser preferences, facilitating the export of themes to share them in VivaldiThemes, a site that users who wish to customize the appearance of the application can go to without using the editor. A gallery of community-created themes awaits you there.

Other new features in Vivaldi 5.0 include a new translation web panel which extends the functionality of the web translator integrated in Vivaldi 4.0 as an on-demand tool, which does result in a practical addition. Namely: in the style of Chrome’s translator, Vivaldi’s allows you to translate entire pages, but also selected fragments, as can only be done in Chrome using the Google Translate extension.

Now the translator moves to the side panels of the browser to be used by copying and pasting the text in a much more comfortable way depending on the situation. It needs to work a little faster, because depending on the amount of text to be translated, it takes time, but it does so outside of Google, which is an important plus. And with options such as history, with which to retrieve translations made previously.

Without completely abandoning web panels, Vivaldi abstracts from them the download panel, now offering the option of displaying it independently in the toolbar … in the style of Firefox, you could say to mention something similar. An optional change, it is worth repeating, but to be appreciated, because the opening of the side panel every time you download something is a bit heavy.

Finally, Vivaldi 5.0 also materializes on Android, with its own novelties. The most prominent include the optimized for use on tablets of the browser interface, more comprehensively integrating the menus and panels where there is more space for viewing. The same is true in the version of Vivaldi for smartphones.

Vivaldi 5.0 for smartphones adopts the double lash bar introduced in Vivaldi 3.6, but without interfering with the stacks of tabs: it is simply a method of being able to see more tabs at the same time, although as it happens in the PC application, it can be deactivated from the browser preferences.

Another very interesting novelty in Vivaldi 5.0 for Android can be found in “Settings> Theme”: there you can activate the dark mode for web pages. Once activated, it can be manually disabled for each page from the browser menu. Try it with MC, it looks fancy (this is a feature available in Chromium and therefore extensible to the rest of its derivatives, but Vivaldi’s implementation is excellent).

Finally, they have added the also very practical function of attach note, thus allowing additional text to be added by means of selections to already created notes. Let’s see when this reaches the desktop, because it is a very useful function to take seriously the note editor that the browser incorporates.
