VOD news 39/22: ‘Andor’, a Star Wars story… different

VOD News brings you the best releases of the week on Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+… And like everything that goes up, it has to come down, this week we descend towards the valley of the contents, one in which Andor, by itself, but also because there is nothing else that makes it a minimum of competition. Although, as always, everything is to taste, so keep reading if you are not very fanciful.

Total, that Disney + resumes the header of the section, a couple of weeks after presenting the infumable Pinocchiowith a new series of galaxies: Andor.

Star Wars: Andor

and what is it about Andor, you ask yourself. Well, it’s about Cassian Andor, the pseudo Han Solo who co-starred Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyalthough instead of continuing his story… Ahem!, they recover the previous one. Or what is the same, Andor It is a kind of prequel to the movie in which a bit of the life of the aforementioned is told and the vicissitudes that made him join the rebel forces in that galaxy so far away.

How could it be otherwise, the Mexican Diego Luna repeats in the role of Cassian Andor, who is surrounded by faces more and less known than his, see Stellan Skarsgård (Mamma Mia, Chernobyl), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter, killing eve) or Adria Arjona (6 in the shadow, Morbius), among others. A good well-equipped cast, as usual, due to the level of production shown so far by the Lucasfilm series for Disney +. The surprise, however, is in the tone.

And it is that if until now the remarkable The Mandalorianthe mediocre boba fett book and the bittersweet Obi-Wan Kenobi -we ignore the animated incursions- they moved through familiar coordinates in the broad sense of the word, Andor is different. In tone, more adult than usual; but also in history, which in the same way runs along paths somewhat alien to those marked by the canon of space adventures of the franchise.

Andor it’s unlike anything you’ve seen in Star Wars to date, and that’s a good thing, because repeating the formula ad nauseam doesn’t seem like the best way to keep the flame alive. On the other hand, of course, sometimes it goes a little too far from what many fans are used to and you even have a hard time recognizing in the series the essence of a universe in which bugs of all kinds and conditions swarm, Jedi Knights included. It will be a matter of seeing it in its entirety to judge properly.

We continue with the Netflix offer, full of… I save it, but it’s not saving it or the related criticism.

DAHMEReither Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is one of the most outstanding releases of the week on Netflix, a miniseries that recreates the terrifying trajectory of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, a most sinister character who in this recreation brings to life, quite correctly by all accounts, Evan Peters (American Horror Story, X-Men: Apocalypse). But not even for those is another Netflix production focused on morbidity saved. By the way, this Dahmer was a true Star Wars fan, obsessed with looking like Emperor Palpatine…
