Vodafone and Google Cloud work to boost 5G networks in Europe

Vodafone Y Google Cloud work together with Cardinality.ioin it development of a cloud-based network performance platform which aims to change the way the operator develops and maintains its 5G network infrastructure in Europe. With it, Vodafone wants to simplify the backend systems and performance management tools used by mobile operators in many of their processes, such as capacity planning, network optimization, customer experience and 5G computing services and edge. By simplifying backend systems, and gaining more visibility into data, as well as the ability to act on it immediately, Vodafone believes they will be able to offer more advanced and reliable mobile services to their customers.

The platform under development, known as Vodafone Unified Performance Management (UPM)ie Vodafone Unified Performance Management; combines Google’s intelligent analytics, as well as machine learning and Artificial Intelligence capabilities, with Cardinality.io’s telecommunications-specific services, which allow the collection and analysis of billions of data points in the 11 countries in which it has a presence.

The platform will replace more than 100 independent network performance applications in those 11 countries, offering all subsidiaries and divisions of the operator a single source of data, which can be optimized and analyzed through Artificial Intelligence.

John Wibergh, CTO of Vodafonehas pointed out that «As the needs of our more than 300 million mobile customers evolve, so does our network with this new platform. It is a global data hub that gives us a real-time view of what is happening at any point in our network, and uses our global scale to manage traffic growth more efficiently and economically while the data consumption of customers grows about 40% each year, and supports full automation of our network by 2025«.

The data obtained from this data repository will be used to more effectively plan the construction of the network, as well as to detect patterns in traffic, and to make decisions and make changes to the infrastructure in minutes, not days. In addition, the data and cost savings that Vodafone will achieve with this platform will allow the operator to focus its resources on the areas where 5G is most needed.

Thus, for example, the operator can focus on adding capacity and integrating network connectivity when responding to large events or when there is a major incident. Also in managing energy efficiency and returning services more quickly after a natural disaster. With Vodafone’s UPM platform, the operator will be able to troubleshoot fasterenabling your engineering teams to solve more problems without the need for human intervention, and focus on projects that deliver real change to your customers.
