Vodafone opens its European R&D Center in Malaga

Vodafone has inaugurated its new European R&D Center in Malaga, where it will centralize its research and development activities in the region. This hub will be in charge of creating the company’s future products and services, as well as designing its digital solutions. The company will invest for it 225 million euros in the next five years in the centerwhich is expected to create more than 600 direct jobs for highly qualified professionals.

Thanks to Vodafone’s geographic scale, the operator will use the center to halve the time it takes to develop and launch new products, at lower cost, in several countries at the same time. This center, in which its first 40 employees are already working, will be specialized in the development of new digital solutions and services based on unified communications, the Internet of Things, edge computing, MPN (Mobile Private Network, i.e. mobile private network) and OpenRAN, an open and interoperable networking standard. On the other hand, it will also deal with the commercial operations of the Vodafone Group and its business customers in 11 countries.

Apart from the creation of this center, Vodafone will promote the development of talent in areas such as those related to the development of technological platforms and the development of services, sales and marketing. It will also do the same with customer support and with the digital transformation of companies. To do this, it will reach agreements with universities, professional training schools, companies and local institutions. Apart from this, it will also seek to favor the creation of business consortiums to participate in public R&D projects. With this, Vodafone plans to promote the creation of an innovation hub centered on its R&D hub and increase the impact it will have in the area.

For now, the operator is looking for various profiles to join the center, including product and solution architects, scrum masters, software engineers, both front and back end developers, data engineers, UX experts, experts in digital sales processes, cloud developers, experts in innovation and financing projects, human resources and IT personnel and experts in blockchain and cybersecurity.

Some of the most outstanding projects that the center is currently working on are the development of IoT projects for different business verticals, as well as the development of Internet of Things platforms for online businesses. They will also create a Digital Transformation Design Center with experts in customer experience. Likewise, the management of mobile private networks, the development of 5G applications, the use of automatic learning in networks and the creation of digital interfaces will be promoted. It will also bet on the design of specifications for OpenRAN chips.

For now, the Vodafone Business R&D Center is provisionally located at the Impact hub in Malaga, a coworking center.
