The Pixel Watch was not what you might call a revolutionary connected watch. When it was released, it lacked some of the most popular features already available in other devices, and it ultimately had to wait for updates before Google fixed it.

The watch also suffered from other shortcomings, including a fairly low autonomy or a fairly underpowered processor. However, all of that should change with the next generation.

The Pixel Watch 2 will use a new processor signed Qualcomm.

According to Android Authority, a new chipset will power the next iteration of the American company’s timepiece. According to the report, the old Exynos 9110 chip, introduced in 2018, will be replaced on the next Pixel Watch by the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1, one of Qualcomm’s newest processors. This therefore confirms what a previous rumor said.

It would be the standard W5 Gen 1 and not the W5+ Gen 1 which comes with a dedicated QCC5100 coprocessor. Google apparently went with the non-Plus variant because it wanted use its own NXP coprocessor like in the original Pixel Watch.

Thanks to this new chip engraved in 4 nm, we should see significant gains in performance and efficiency, which will considerably improve the autonomy of the watch. The Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 also supports low power consumption features such as deep sleep and hibernation, which will help improve battery life.

Moreover, speaking of battery, the Pixel Watch 2 would be equipped with306 mAh battery (typical), an increase of 4.1% compared to the 294 mAh battery that the original Pixel Watch was equipped with.

The Pixel Watch will have an improved screen

The report also claims that the Google Pixel Watch 2 will have massive black edges like its predecessor, but this time around the smartwatch will come with a 1.2-inch circular OLED screen with a resolution of 384 x 384 pixels from Samsung Display instead of BOE. The recent Galaxy Watch 6 would therefore still have a lead in this area. Although the design is not improved, we should still enjoy a better quality screen.

The Pixel Watch 2 will also be equipped with a UW (Ultra WideBand) chip, which could allow the Pixel Watch 2 to be used for precise device finding, unlocking cars using the digital car key, and seamlessly transferring media playback to a rooted Pixel tablet or a future Nest speaker equipped with ultra-wideband (UWB). Google is known to be preparing its own rival to Apple’s AirTag, so the arrival of Ultra WideBand on the watch is good news.

Besides, Google Pixel Watch 2 will run Wear OS 4, based on Android 13, with dynamic themes and will support seamless updates, which would be a first for a smartwatch. In other words, it will no longer be necessary to restart the watch to perform a software update.

Finally, the report also confirms earlier rumors that the LTE variant of the device is codenamed “Eros”, while the Wi-Fi model is called “Aurora”. Despite the updated specs, the Pixel Watch 2 might retain some aspects of its predecessor, including the design.
