What devices will not be able to update to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17?

There are still a few months to go before the formal presentation of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, which except for a huge surprise will take place at WWDC 2023 next June, in an event in which we still do not know if the leading role will fall on Apple’s expected augmented reality viewer. Just a few days ago we told you that the shadow of a new delay hangs over the expected announcement, but there is a diversity of opinions in this regard, since other analysts say that the plans to present it in June continue ahead.

If the viewer is finally announced, it will undoubtedly capture all the prominence of the event, even though expectations about it do not seem to be as high as one might want in Cupertino, since there is no doubt that they will know how to sell it as something revolutionary and, even if it is temporary, initially it will leave many of us with the feeling that we need a device like that in our lives. This effect can last for minutes or last forever, that is variable, but without a doubt the initial impact will be loud.

Otherwise, if no such announcement occurs, probably much of the prominence will fall on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, future versions of the iPhone and iPad operating systems. We still don’t know much about them, but after some initial rumors that they would be minor revisions, the theory has begun to gain weight that this will not be the case in the end, and that very interesting news will come from them (although, curiously, analysts that point out in this sense do not give a single concrete data in this regard).

What devices will not be able to update to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17?

Be that as it may, staying for another year on the list of devices that can make the jump to the latest version is always good news, which finds its counterpart in all those that Apple considers to have completed their life cycle, and for which it therefore no longer offers updates. And today, thanks to a leak echoed by MacRumors, we already have a list of devices that will not be able to update to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.

iOS 17

First of all, with regard to the iPhone, these are the models that will not be able to make the leap to iOS 17:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8Plus
  • iPhone X

Thus, and as happened with the previous change in operating system, we see that there are two generations that are left out of the update. It is worrying, because it makes you wonder if Apple is not considering reducing the life of the iPhone by leaving them without operating system updates. We will have to wait and see if this is confirmed and, if so, what will happen next year with iOS 18. However, remember that the European Union intends to establish a period of life (through updates to the operating system and software) that could limit Apple’s intentions in this regard.

iPadOS 17

In the case of the Apple tablet, these are the models that would remain anchored in iPadOS 16:

  • iPad Pro 9.7 (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation)
  • ipad fifth generation

Here what we see for the first time is the loss of support for iPad Pro, the top-of-the-range version of the tablet from Cupertino. This is normal and sooner or later it had to arrive, but even so it has a certain symbolism that, without a doubt, will not be funny to those who still use these models.
