What happened to Death Stranding on the Epic Games Store?

Surely you will remember that yesterday we first anticipated you and then we confirmed that Epic Games was giving away Death Stranding in its store. From early in the morning, rumors suggested that the latest (so far) creation by Ideo Kojima would be the biggest gift in the Epic Games Christmas campaign which, like other years, has decided to sweeten Christmas by giving us one game a day for just over two weeks.

When we anticipated it, you could still obtain Metro: Last Light Redux and at the end of the twenty-four hours of Death Stranding it has been FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch that has taken over and, therefore, you can obtain for free until 5:00 p.m. (Spanish peninsular time) on December 27. Now, as good a game as FIST is, it is clear that its popularity is nowhere near that of Kokima’s game, and therefore we can hope that yesterday’s problems will not be repeated.

Something that surprised me a lot was that, as I told you when I updated yesterday, Epic Games was not giving away the base version of Death Stranding, no, users could get the much more recent Director’s Cut edition for free (it debuted on PC at earlier this year), obviously somewhat more expensive and, furthermore, it closed itself the possibility of giving away the base edition and offering, for a small economic supplement, the most recent and advanced version.

If you remember that time when Epic Games gave away GTA V and the servers flooded, you probably already expected that this could happen again yesterday, and you would not have been wrong. After the first few minutes in which everything seemed to be going well, that is, until word began to spread, the service became saturated, making it impossible to access it. Some of you told us about it in the comments (thank you very much, by the way!), and the situation dragged on, so we can read on the Internet, for hours, h.

What happened to Death Stranding on the Epic Games Store?

In my case, as I say in the news, I was able to get Death Stranding Director’s Cut in the Epic Games Store but, for some reason, the game appears duplicated in my game list.

But the worst was yet to come, and that is that when the service was restored, it was no longer possible to get the Death Stranding Director’s Cut, the base version of the game was being given away instead… and yes, as we had anticipated in the morning, the update to the Director’s Cut was offered for a special price, only six dollars, as indicated PC Gamer.

So, the big question floating around now is, what really happened? Why did Epic Games switch from one version to another during the store crash? I don’t want to think badly, but it’s hard to rule out the possibility that initially offering the Death Stranding Director’s Cut was a mistake and that, upon being identified, Epic chose to cut the service, run the numbers and decide what to do next, a process in which the choice would be to switch to the base version.

In my case, as I was attentive to update the news if necessary, I was able to obtain it in the first seconds of the promotion, although now, when accessing the Epic Games launcher, two instances of the game are displayed, something that I don’t quite understand. What has been your case? Were you able to get hold of the Director’s Cut, or by the time you were able to get the gift, was it just the original version of the game?
