What power supply do I need to power a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti has become one of the most popular and best-selling graphics cards of the new generation from NVIDIA, and it’s totally understandable since it features an excellent level of performance both in rasterization and in ray tracing, it has a very contained consumption for the power it offers and is also compatible with the frame generation technology present in DLSS 3.

We already told you in our analysis that the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is, in terms of performance, almost on the same level as the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, and that in those titles in which we can activate DLSS 3 and the generation of frames manages to overcome it without problems. It is almost as powerful as the previous top of the range from NVIDIA, and yet it consumes 200 watts less than that one.

This improvement in terms of efficiency that NVIDIA has achieved with the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti implies that, in order to move it without problems, we will not need such a powerful power supply as in the case of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. I also talked about this topic in the analysis, but I know that some of you still have doubts about the specific and ideal requirement to be able to move said graphics card, so today we are going to dedicate an article to clearly solving this issue.

You need a 700-watt power supply to power the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

In this case we see that the requirement against the GeForce RTX 4080 drops by 50 watts. However, it is important to note that the recommendation for a 700-watt supply to drive the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti it is somewhat oversized. This graphics card registered an average consumption of 251 watts in games in my tests, which means that we could move it perfectly even with a 650 watt source. Everything will depend on the rest of the specifications of our equipment.

I will give you the same example that I used when we saw what source we needed to move a GeForce RTX 4080. A PC equipped with an Intel Core i5-13600K processor, 32 GB of DDR5, two PCIe NVMe SSD drives, an all-in-one liquid cooling kit 360 mm and a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti would have an average consumption of 560 watts, which means that with a 650 watt power supply we would have more than enough.

However, if we keep that same configuration but instead of an Intel Core i5-13600K we mount an Intel Core i9-13900K the average consumption of the equipment could reach 660 watts. In this case, we would need a 700-watt power supply. I wanted to give both examples so that you understand how important it is to take into account the configuration of your equipment when choosing the power supply that you really need.

Do not forget that the source must have two additional 8-pin power connectors that will be connected to the included 16-pin adapter. If we do not connect those two additional power cables, the graphics card will not work because it will not receive the power it needs. A source like Cooler Master MWE White V2 700 Watt It would already allow us to move a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti without problems in most cases, and it is priced at only 58.99 euros.

Chassis space and recommended processor

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti doesn’t have a Founders Edition design, so graphics card measurements may differ quite depending on the assembler we choose. However, there are a number of points that all models have in common:

  • They occupy at least three expansion slots.
  • They have a length of between 30 and 35 centimeters long.

This means that we will need a fairly large chassis to be able to mount this graphics card. It is also important that you take into account that the 16-pin power connector must have enough space to avoid excessive bending during its first section, since it is the most fragile part of it and we could have problems with excessive heat accumulation.

As we have said before, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is a very powerful graphics card that reaches almost the level of a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, and this means that to move it optimally we will need a processor configured with at least six cores and twelve threads. and with a high CPI. Starting with an Intel Core i5-12600K and a Ryzen 5 5600X We would already have a good experience. Obviously, at low resolutions (1080p) a processor with a higher IPC, like a Ryzen 5 7600X or an Intel Core i5-13600K, would make a considerable difference.

As for the cooling of your PC and the heat generated by the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, you have nothing to worry about, it is an efficient graphics card and also very cool, since it moves in the range of 57-60 degrees when working at full load. For comparison purposes, a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition is around 81 degrees at full load.
