When should I manually update the Windows Defender database

This is a program that is integrated into the Redmond operating system itself and that offers us all the necessary protection from the moment we start working with the computer. Therefore, it could be said that this is an excellent alternative to the third-party antivirus that we have been using all our lives on our PCs. In fact, this proposal over the years has been improving ostensibly, becoming one of the most powerful antivirus and preferred by the majority.

We must bear in mind that this is software that integrates seamlessly with Microsoft’s own system. Therefore, even if it is constantly in operation, we will hardly notice it nor will it influence the rest of the OS.

Types of antivirus updates

To all this, we add that it is free and that it does not stop constantly receiving updates through Windows Update. But both in this and in the rest of the operating systems we must take into consideration that there are two different types of updates. On the one hand, we find the usual ones that correspond to the updates that the program receives as such. These are in charge, as you know, of correcting possible errors as well as adding new ones developed functionalities.

The second type refers to updates to the internal database that these types of programs have. The latest malicious codes are stored here so that the antivirus itself is able to detect and eliminate them. Both types can be updated both automatically and manually, at least in most cases. That is why, on certain occasions, we will be interested in updating said database ourselves by hand. These are the most common situations in which we must carry out this process with Windows Defender.

When the antivirus detects some malware

Although at first we do not realize it, as a rule antivirus are constantly running in the background in Windows. In this way they are trained and waiting for any possible infection or arrival of malicious code suddenly. That is one of the main functions of this type of security software, so it would warn us before the bad happens to greater.

At that moment, we recommend updating the Windows Defender database in case the content detected has any more current hidden code. It must be said that we achieve this by accessing the program itself from the Settings application and clicking on Search for updates in the section Updates for protection against viruses and threats.

Before downloading any suspicious program

Another more than opportune moment when it comes to updating Microsoft’s antivirus database is when we are going to download some kind of suspicious content. Sometimes we download programs or files from the internet that we already know could contain some type of virus or malware. But if we are not sure about it, the best thing we can do is update the database that we are talking about in these lines.

In this way, if we continue with the download as such, we will be protected against any eventuality related to some hidden malware, no matter how current it is.

If the last update was days ago

We must also take into consideration what just above the link which allows us to update this database, we find a date. As you can imagine, this refers to the last time this element was updated, either manually or automatically. Running in general this process takes place on its own from time to time.

However, in the event that we come across a date that exceeds the week of the time period, we recommend that you update this element manually at that moment. In this way we will have less chance of being infected by some type of malicious code.
