After a 100% virtual edition, Sundance has finally unveiled its 2022 awards. It’s a horror film that hits the jackpot.

The 38th edition of the Sundance independent film festival has just ended. An event still placed under the sign of the pandemic, which forced the organization to bet on a fully virtual ceremony. Thanks to its VR platform, Sundance has brought together moviegoers from all over the world. It makes it possible to reproduce the real conditions of this kind of event, without barrier gestures and restrictive measures.

After 10 days of screening, Sundance Institute has shared the lists of winners. It is the first feature film by director Nikyatu Jusu which wins the Grand Jury Prize. Nanny follows the adventures of an undocumented nanny who cares for a privileged child on New York’s Upper East Side. As she prepares for the arrival of the son she left behind in West Africa, a supernatural presence invades her daily life. A horror film that interests according to the director “to women who are usually relegated to the periphery in other women’s stories”.

A performance hailed by critics and the organizers of Sundance which explains: “Jusu elegantly weaves supernatural entities derived from West African folklore transforming Nanny into a very singular film, with horrors specifically drawn from Aisha’s life and legacy.”

No date yet in France

For now, the feature film has no French release date. We can nevertheless hope that this award will have attracted the attention of several French broadcasters, and that it will soon land in our dark rooms.

Dakota Johnson in the Audience Award

If it’s Nanny which won the prestigious Jury award, it was an Apple TV+ feature film that won the favor of the public. Cha Cha Real Smooth, directed by Cooper Raiff thus obtains the title of best American dramatic film according to the spectators. The film, starring Dakota Johnson and Cooper Raiff follows the adventures of a bar mitzvah host who befriends a young mother and her autistic daughter. The two actors give the reply to Leslie Mann (I Love You Phillip Morris) and Brad Garrett (The comeback).

Produced by Apple TV+, it should land soon on the platform. For the moment, the Apple has not yet given a precise date, we can nevertheless hope to discover it later this year.
