Will we see a macOS 13? Which will be his name? What’s new? What we know so far.

macOS

What we know so far is that WWDC 2022 will begin in a few days and we will have the pleasure of discovering a new operating system for Macs. In principle, this is expected to be version number 13. A number loaded with symbolism. Good for some and bad for others. Let us remember that there are those who do not build plant 13 or who won 12+1 championships. I think that for Apple there is no superstition that is worth, and we will have macOS 13. The name is not yet known, although it is speculated with Mammoth.

In June we will leave doubts about this macOS 13

The next developer conference to be held in June of this year 2022, will have as its protagonist, the new versions of operating systems. We look forward to what will happen to the future of macOS and we will see and know not only the functions that it will be able to perform, but also under what name it will do so. That it is presented in June, does not mean that we already have it available on that date. It won’t be until October when we can really start using it for all users. First, a few months of Beta, to polish possible bugs and add last-minute improvements.

What will this macOS 13 be called?

The computers will have version 13 of macOS. It would not be unusual for the American company to use this numbering as it has already done on the iPhone. They don’t seem to think that this number could be the prelude to something bad. The question is what it will be called. What name will accompany the number.

As usual, since 2013 the company has been using the name of some characteristic area or place in California. It is not surprising that this is the case in this new version. However, it has been discovered by the specialized sector that Yosemite Research LLC had naming rights for computer systems that would extend to the term “mammoth«. Reference is made to the winter sports complex on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. It may be so, but nothing is certain in this field.

What Mac will be able to with this new version of macOS?

Regardless of what type of chip the Mac has, what we have to look at is whether it will be able to run this new version normally. We are clear that the computers with the new chips will not only be able to handle it, but we are sure that the new version is as if it had been made for them. Especially for the new versions. Now, we must not forget that at the moment, we have Macs with Intel and therefore, this new system must be compatible with them. Although little by little they are condemned to “digital death”.

Another thing that we are clear about is that the most modern computers, those that run versions of macOS Monterey, will have the update available to them. At the moment these are:

  • MacBook from 2016 or later
  • MacBook Air models from 2015 or later
  • MacBook Pro from 2015 or later
  • Mac mini from Fall 2014 or later
  • iMac from Fall 2015 or later
    iMac Pro (all models)
Mac Pro from 2013 or later
  • MacStudio

News

Let’s start with the design

Little or almost nothing, there has been talk of the changes that macOS 13 may undergo in relation to its predecessors. We have the experience of Monterey that it was not a substantial change, considering that the real changes were brought by macOS Big Sur. So it is thought that in terms of design and aesthetics, little news we can expect.

Functions and Applications

Universal control

After several releases of Monterey, we have an unfinished business with the Application or rather, with the Universal Control functionality. This allows us to use the same mouse or trackpad to select your Mac screen, type on your Mac with the keyboard, and then select your iPad screen. It can also be dragged and dropped from one Mac to another, and visually it will appear that you only have a second screen configured with your Mac. With the new version, we should add more features and refine the ones we already have.

launch pad

Apple could do without the Launchpad and replace it with the app library. With this they could be sorted by category as they are on the iPad and iPhone.

Time Machine backups in the cloud

Something that we have been asking for for a long time to come true. The ability that the Mac can do Time Machine backups directly to iCloud. Now, I think that Apple would have to modify the prices of cloud storage, because nobody could have a basic account if they want this type of copies. Although if we think coldly, it is a very good option to attract more paying customers to the iCloud + service

Siri improvements

Just as on the iPhone Siri seems to be an essential helper for many things, on the Mac it’s nothing to write home about. That is why we hope and wish that in the next version of macOS, we will be able to see a much better focused assistant to user help

Siri

LiveText

One of the features I’m using the most with my iPhone lately is Live Text. the possibility of extracting text from images in a simple way, through a photo is amazing. imagine doing the same but from the Mac and not just in a photo. If not that by magic we can extract those texts from our computer and without having to take those screenshots or photos.

Better password management

The possibility that the passwords saved on our Mac can be used in other browsers that, at the moment, do not use them. Also, the passwords for email accounts and for access to WLAN or network drives are in another environment. Apple could combine password management under one roof in the next version of macOS and possibly open it for other programs.

Apple may also continue down the path of passwordless login via the open web standard Web Authentication (WebAuthn), which is only available as an experimental feature for developers on macOS Monterey.

There are many improvements that can be implemented. Surely many of them cannot be done without having to disrupt other elements that are not highly recommended. Therefore, we will have to wait to see what they tell us in a few days.
