Windows 11 22H2 loses a lot of performance when copying large files

It seems that Windows 11 22H2 It has not started off on the best foot. After the NVIDIA driver was found to be causing problems, Microsoft has now confirmed a performance degradation when copying large files.

According to Ned Pyle, Principal Program Manager in the Windows Server Engineering Group, users may experience in Windows 11 22H2 (or Windows 11 2022 Update) a Up to 40% performance loss when copying a multi-gigabyte file over SMB, more specifically in the reading process. Pyle himself has said that they have not detected the problem in previous versions of the operating system.

However, it is important to note that using SMB is only the main scenario where Microsoft is seeing the performance issue, as the corporation has also detected cases when carrying out a process of copying and pasting locallywithin the same computer (not necessarily the same drive).

Microsoft is currently investigating the origin of the bug to develop the corresponding patch to solve it. In the meantime, the company has recommended using robocopy either xcopy with parameter /J to restore lost performance.

It seems that the Redmond giant has run into more obstacles than desired in Windows 11 22H2, which is possibly a bit annoying if we see that its next-generation operating system has already been on the market for a while. On the other hand, Windows 10 has already accustomed us to these dynamics.

Despite the pronounced performance problem, copying and pasting large amounts of data or large files is not something that is done every day, or at least it is in the case of most common users, so in the background this failure may go unnoticed by many.
