3D emojis were part of Microsoft’s promises during the official presentation of Windows 1. Since then, the OS has been available and emojis are still waiting. Don’t worry, the manufacturer is still working on their development.
As you may know, Windows 11 is still far from fulfilling all the promises made by Microsoft. Indeed, many key features highlighted by the manufacturer are still not available, such as support for Android applications. On this subject, a public beta phase will be launched in February 2022.
Among other shortcomings, there are also 3D emojis. In October 2021, Microsoft is releasing a new OS update for Insiders. A patch containing in particular the long-awaited “new” emojis. However, the reality is quite different. 3D emojis have given way to simple 2D emojis all the more classic.
Faced with the discontent of users, Microsoft explained itself, acknowledging that it lacked clarity “as to where the 3D emojis would actually appear”. In truth, the3D emojis will be available in a handful of apps like Microsoft Teams or Skype. And when will they be available? On this subject, still no precise date.
3D emojis will eventually come to Windows 11
Nevertheless, Nanda Costa, veteran design at Microsoft, recently published a blog post in which he gives information on the company’s new direction regarding 3D emojis. First, he explains that the idea of producing 3D emojis to germinate after the “Fix Hack Learn”a quarterly event where Microsoft employees are free to explore the concepts they are passionate about.
“At the time, the focus of our project was on making our reactions system more inclusive, by allowing customers to choose their skin tone when reacting to a message or post on Teams and Yammer. . But it was clear that we also had the opportunity to reimagine our emojis in a whole new light. And that’s finally what we did”, he details.
Nanda Costa also discusses why Microsoft reflects certain characteristics such as wrinkles, hairstyle and hair color in its emojis, or how certain designs were inspired by “the new reality of a hybrid workplace”, in reference to telecommuting. To develop them, the company relied on several tools and software such as Adobe Illustrator, Cinema 4D from Maxon, Figma or Font Lab.
