Windows 11 Notepad will have tabs

Windows Notepad is, by its own right, one of the applications included in the operating system most appreciated by users. Whether due to its seniority, its versatility (from writing down the shopping list to reviewing the code) or its more than characteristic design (which, however, had an interesting facelift just over a year ago), the case it is that it is one of those programs that we have all used on more occasions than we can remember.

Although many people agree in dating the origin of Notepad in November 1985, with the launch of Windows 1.0, the truth is that its development is earlier. The first version of Notepad was presented in 1983, at COMDEX, as a multipurpose notepad for MS-DOS with mouse support, which accompanied the Microsoft Mouse, the first Redmond mouse, marketed for $195 in its debut. .

Since then, the truth is that its interface hasn’t evolved much either, it hasn’t even been adapted to the graphical interface of each of the versions of Windows that have seen the light of day since then. But this, which in other cases would be highly criticized, has paradoxically turned out to be a virtue for many of its users, who highly value a simple design, with the four essential controls and menus. 3D? Shaded? Smoothed shapes? Thanks but no thanks, better a design as minimalist as the dashboard of a Seat Panda.

Now, there are changes and changes, and personally this one seems to me to be a success since, according to what we can read in MSPowerUser, a Microsoft employee has accidentally leaked that Notepad will have tabs. And it is not that he has told it, no, it is that he has published an image in which we can see, in great detail, the appearance of the Notepad that is already being tested in the Microsoft offices. And yes, you read that correctly, the screenshot itself indicates that this function is confidential and, therefore, you should not talk about it or take screenshots. The tweet has been deleted after a few minutes but, of course, it has been more than enough time for many users to download and save the image.

This tabbed Notepad isn’t available on any of the Windows 11 Insider channels yet, so we shouldn’t expect it any time soon. However, it makes sense to hope that it ends up materializing sometime in 2023, perhaps during the first months of the year for insiders, and at the end of it, either with Windows 11 23H2 or in one of the future Moments.
