Windows 11 tests a feature that was already tested in Windows 95

Most computer users, whether laptop or desktop, use a Windows operating system. It seems that Microsoft is now thinking of bringing back a feature that was tested in Windows 95 and never implemented. Windows 11 now try the tabbed feature for file manager.

Probably, you have never seen or used Windows 95, since this operating system was released in 1995. More than 25 years have passed since the release of this operating system, which is already obsolete and “forgotten” by Microsoft. For this I tried a tab system within the file manager, which was never implemented.

Microsoft resurrects tabs with file manager

Currently, all browsers offer a bookmarks bar where we can save web pages or folders. This function is designed to simplify access to the web pages we use and not have to memorize the URLs. This function would now be looking to implement within the Microsoft operating system.

As he has discovered, Windows 11 2022 Moments1 update adds page function tabs in the file manager. We know little else at the moment, since at the moment it would only be present for selected users.

Windows 95 tabbed system

The Microsoft page already indicated that:

File Explorer improvements, including the addition of tabs to File Explorer to help you organize your File Explorer sessions just like you do in Microsoft Edge. The new home page in File Explorer gives you quick access to your favorite and recent files, so you can pin important files for quick and easy access.

But, the interesting thing is that this function was already tested on Windows 95. The user @wowstartsnow has remembered that the tab system within the file manager was already thought of more than 25 years ago. Unfortunately, never implementedfor unknown reasons.

We do not know very well if this function, which is beginning to be tested, will end up being released. It would be interesting if this function were available and we could test it. It should also be possible to turn it on or off, not that it’s on by default.

We’ll see what problems it brings

We must bear in mind that lately, Microsoft updates give a lot of problems. Recently, the rollout of the Windows 11 22H2 update had to be halted due to gaming performance issues. The update caused noticeable performance drops due to the GPU performance debugging feature.

Not surprisingly, users did not like the games malfunctioning due to Microsoft. Something that has forced the company to take action, stopping the deployment of the update and launching an urgent update.

Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen with this tab system for the file manager. But, without a doubt, the most important thing is that the function can be activated at will. It would be a bad idea for this peculiar feature to be the user’s decision and not an imposition. We’ll see if it ends up arriving or happens like with its integration in Win95, which remains in limbo.
