Windows 11: the latest update breaks the task manager

A few days ago, Microsoft released a new update for Windows 11 22H2. Via this patch, the manufacturer has finally resolved performance issues on certain games and applications reported by users. Unfortunately, a new task manager bug has surfaced with this update.

We mentioned it in our columns this Wednesday, November 30, 2022. While Windows 11 22H2 users had been complaining for several weeks about performance issues on certain games and applications, Microsoft finally decided to deploy a fix yesterday through a new Windows update.

Responding to the code name KB5020044, this version therefore prevents the games and apps concerned from “inadvertently enable GPU performance debugging features”. These processes used additional resources and could therefore cause slowdowns. Fortunately, this is no longer the case.

At the same time, the Redmond firm took advantage of this update to integrate a new storage indicator for OneDrive as well as a reworked version of Windows Spotlight. Now users can access the Live Wallpapers system directly in Settings > Personalization.

Too bad, the latest Windows update also brings a new bug

At first glance, this update is therefore 100% beneficial for Windows 11 22H2 users. Unfortunately, the manufacturer’s optional update has allowed a new bug to enter. And yes, another problem now affects Windows 11 Task Manager. Good news, however, since Microsoft is already aware of the existence of this malfunctionas evidenced by this statement on its website:

After installing KB5020044, Task Manager may display some user interface (UI) elements in unexpected colors. On affected devices, Task Manager should work as expected, but some parts of the user interface may not be readable.” writes the constructor.

From what we know, this bug would mainly affect users who have in Settings > Personalization > Colors have configured the section “Choose your mode” on “Personalized”. Specifically, this issue occurs when the display mode for Windows is set to Clear, while the default display mode for apps is Dark.

Pending the deployment of a new fix for this bug, Microsoft advises users to disable the Custom option in “Choose your mode” and instead configure it in “Dark” or “Light” mode.
