Windows: Microsoft loses 17% of users in 10 years to Apple

According to a new report from StockApps, Windows is showing a dizzying drop in PC speed. While Microsoft’s operating system was installed on 90.96% of computers in 2013, it only held 73.72% of market share in December 2021. A fall that necessarily benefits Apple, which has recovered the majority of these users.

If Apple products have never really been niche, it is clear that they are aimed at a very specific clientele, facing a general public who tend to turn to Windows and Android devices. However, this status quo has tended to change in recent years. The latest figures from StockApps on the smartphone market clearly show this. While Android is gradually losing its users, iOS is rising in the polls.

An observation that is also confirmed on the PC side. The undisputed leader in the sector, Windows has nevertheless suffered a serious loss of speed in recent years. Also according to StockApps, Microsoft’s operating system held 90.96% market share in 2013. Since then, things have changed a lot since this figure has dropped to 73.72%. As you might expect, these users have not vanished into thin air: the vast majority have gone to Apple.

Windows loses 17% market share in 10 years

Indeed, macOS now holds 15.33% of the market share, against 7.95% in 2013. Of course, the operating system is not the only one to benefit from the exodus of Windows users, since Linux and ChromeOS have also seen their popularity soar. A situation that manufacturers owe, among other things, to the exponential rise of PCs in recent years.

However, this does not mean that macOS is about to become the new market leader, and this for the same reason as iOS. While Microsoft distributes its OS to all manufacturers, Apple jealously reserves its own for its own products. Rest macOS is progressing, and rapidly. At the start of 2022, the apple brand was the fourth largest computer seller in the world.
