With positive effects, peanuts are a protector against the coronavirus

The cacahuate, dried fruit of common consumption, rreported positive effects on cognitive function and the stress response in young, healthy people, the finding could also help people who suffered or has COVID.

The peanut is technically a legume, because it grows in a pod, but it is classified as a dried fruit, since its fat concentration is higher than that of dried legumes.

They are high in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, calcium and cholesterol-free vegetable oils that are healthy fats.

As if that were not enough, it is the food with the highest concentration of arginine, an amino acid that maintains strong the immune system, the cognitive functions of the brain and regulates blood sugar levels.

A work published in Clinical Nutrition reported new knowledge on the effects on peanut consumption, says that daily intake has beneficial effects on health.

The research was directed by the expert Rosa M. Lamuela from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

The analysis was conducted with a group of 63 healthy people between the ages of 18 and 33 who included a regular serving of peanut products in their daily intake.

“Most of these studies have been done in a population with obesity, metabolic syndrome or at risk of chronic diseases,” he explained.

In the profile of people at risk, it is easier to observe a beneficial effect if we change the eating pattern or introduce a healthy food into their usual diet, “Lamuela explained.

The high content of polyphenols and prebiotic fiber in peanuts may explain its effects on the intestinal microbiota, the team analyzed the potential health effects of its consumption through various cognitive and analytical tests related to biochemical indicators of the response to stress.

The results also revealed an increase in short chain fatty acids in the stool and in specific biomarkers of this nut, very long chain saturated fatty acids and certain polyphenols, all of them bioactive compounds related to health benefits.

Regarding COVID-19, in addition to being a psychiatric stressor, it could have direct effects on the central nervous system, since in vitro studies have shown the virus’s ability to replicate in nerve cells. Eating peanuts can help strengthen the immune system.
