Zhaoxin KH-4000 and KX-6000G, new server chips that are a breakthrough for China

China has made another important step forward on its path to technological independence with the Zhaoxin KH-4000 and KX-6000G, two new families of server processors that are designed as embedded solutions, primarily targeting cloud computing, analytics and databases, and high-performance storage platforms.

The Zhaoxin KH-4000 are manufactured in the 16nm node and use the Yongfeng architecture, which means that we are facing x86 processors that can work with 32 bits and with 64 bits. They are equipped with SSE 4.2, AVX, AVX2, SM2, SM3, SM4 instructions, support up to 2TB of DDR4 ECC (error correcting) memory per socket, offer up to 128 PCIe Gen3 lanes, and are configured with up to 32 cores and 32 threads running at 2GHz-2.2GHz.

This 32-core model will be the most powerful in its range, but it will be accompanied by two other less powerful and cheaper configurations, one with 16 cores and 16 threads at 2 GHz-2.2 GHz and another with 12 cores and 12 threads at 2.2 GHz. The Zhaoxin KH-4000 will not have an integrated GPU, and its IPC will be, in theory, similar to that of AMD’s first generation Zen processors.

The Zhaoxin KX-6000G will be APUs, since will have a CPU and an integrated GPU. These models will not have the same processing power as the previous ones, but they have several keys in their favor, such as their low consumption, their efficiency compared to the previous generation and their ease of integration in small equipment, ranging from mini PCs to industrial grade fanless solutions as well as tablets and laptops.

This generation of APUs uses the Lujiazui Architecture, It is manufactured in a 16 nm node, they have a 32-bit/64-bit x86 CPU with SSE4.2, AVX, SM2, SM3, SM4 instructions, it has four cores at 2 GHz-3 GHz in its 15 watt configuration, and can run at 2.6 GHz-3 GHz base frequency and 3.3 GHz turbo frequency in its 25 watt and 35 watt versions.

Zhaoxin KX-6000G APUs support up to 64 GB of 3,200 MHz DDR4 memory, offer 16 PCIe Gen3 lanes, and feature a GPU C-1080p, which is theoretically compatible with DirectX12, OpenCL 1.2 and OpenGL 4.6. It allows working with 4K resolution and offers hardware video decoding.

These new chips could be marketed outside of China, especially now that Russia has been severely isolated and is having trouble acquiring the components it needs for its technology infrastructure. They are not the most advanced processors out there, but they have a lot of potential and they’re only a few years apart of the current generations. Zhaoxin’s first graphics card was a much more archaic product and poor in performance.
