Twitter is one of the social networks where there are more fake accounts, these fake accounts are usually registered to act as bots and distribute phishing to try to steal money from users, to directly send malware and infect computers if we click on a link. Silence any fake account notifications
Currently there are a lot of fake accounts on Twitter that are used to send SPAM messages to users, in fact, many of these messages are phishing messages to steal from us, and they can even send us malware. Twitter has some options in its “Settings and privacy” section to limit this, since it will allow us to silence all accounts that do not meet certain requirements.
In order to access these options, we simply have to click on the «Options» and choose «Settings and privacy«, if you enter from the PC you can see it here:

Once we are inside the «Filters» menu, we will have to click on the «Silenced notifications“, as you can see below:
Now in the menu «Silenced notifications» you can choose between different available options:
- that you don’t follow: no message will appear from an account that we did not previously follow.
- they don’t follow you: If they don’t follow you, they won’t be able to send you any messages.
- whose account is new: If the account has been recently created, no notification will appear. Generally, fake and spam accounts “do not last” long on Twitter because people report them, for this reason, this option is very important for you to check, with the objective
- That they still use the default profile picture: It is very common for bots not to change the profile picture, although this does not guarantee 100% that it is not human, there are people who do not change the profile picture.
- They did not confirm their email: This option removes 90% of fake accounts, since these accounts usually do not verify email. It is one of the most important boxes that you should check.
- They did not confirm their phone number: this option removes 99% of fake accounts, the negative part is that many people do not have their phone number on Twitter, so you would miss a lot of messages if you activate it.
We recommend that you check the boxes for “whose account is new”, “who still use the default profile picture” and also “who did not confirm their email”.
As you have seen, limiting the messages that fake and bot accounts can send us is quite simple, we just have to indicate which filters to apply. An important detail is that these filters will not affect in any way the accounts that you follow.
