Installing the D-Link DCS-8635LH IP Camera on Video

The D-Link DCS-8635LH home IP camera is a really interesting model as it incorporates a 4MP sensor with 2K resolution, thanks to the 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution at 25 FPS, we will be able to see everything that happens with great clarity and sharpness in our home. In addition, this model is very versatile thanks to the fact that it has IP certification against water and dust, so it is ready to be installed outdoors. Today at RedesZone we are going to show you how to install this camera with the wizard provided by the manufacturer in the free mydlink app.

Steps to install this IP camera

The first thing we have to do to be able to install this IP camera or any IP camera from the manufacturer D-Link is to download and install the free mydlink app. This application is what we need to install, view, manage and administer the camera from anywhere, since it makes use of the manufacturer’s Cloud to carry out all the actions, so we do not need to open ports or configure our router in advance to access remote form. The mydlink application is available for Android and iOS operating systems, so it is compatible with all the smartphones we have today, and also with tablets since it can be installed on these types of devices without any problem.

Once we have installed the app on our smartphone, we will have to register completely free of charge, providing a contact email to create the user with its corresponding password. When we have registered and logged into the app, then we are ready to proceed with the installation of the camera.

Installation requirements

To install this IP camera we will need to have the mydlink app on our smartphone and that we have logged in. We will also need the following:

  • Internet connection of 10Mbps or higher, so that everything works correctly when viewing the camera.
  • Wi-Fi connection in 2.4GHz or 5GHz. This IP camera is dual band selectable, this means that we can connect to WiFi networks in the 2.4GHz band or in the 5GHz band, thanks to this, we can have the best possible coverage and speed so that the camera works perfectly.
  • Wired RJ-45 connection with an Ethernet network cable. This camera also has a Fast-Ethernet RJ-45 port, in the installation wizard it gives us the option to use WiFi or network cable for startup. In our case, we have chosen the connection via WiFi.
  • Have our smartphone or tablet connected to the Wi-Fi wireless network, with Bluetooth turned on and also the location services activated (GPS).

As you have seen, we have to meet these requirements to correctly connect the camera. In the event that we are going to connect it via WiFi, the wired connection will not be necessary, and vice versa.

Recommendations before using the wizard

Before starting to use the configuration wizard, it is highly recommended that you connect the IP camera in a place near the WiFi router, so as not to have coverage problems later, and that the camera is able to locate the WiFi router or WiFi access point very easily and quickly. Once we have configured the camera correctly, then we can unplug it and put it in the final location, but not before just in case we don’t have good wireless coverage.

With the default firmware version you will not be able to select the 5GHz home Wi-Fi networks, you will only be able to “see” the 2.4GHz band WiFi networks. We have encountered this problem for the first time when using the camera, and it is easily solved by updating the firmware as soon as the update notice appears. In this way, you must first configure the camera in the 2.4GHz band and then update the firmware of the camera, which is an automatic process and completely transparent to the user. Once the camera is updated, you can change the network to 5GHz and even reset the camera and run the installation wizard again, then you can connect to 5GHz without any problem.

Step-by-step installation wizard

If we open the mydlink app with the IP camera on, it will automatically recognize that we have the D-Link DCS-8635LH IP camera nearby, click on “Add device” and continue with the wizard, the steps we must follow are:

  1. Scan the QR code that we have in the quick installation guide or in the IP camera itself.
  2. Make sure it is on and with the LED flashing orange.
  3. Turn on location services (GPS) if any
  4. Select the WiFi network where we are going to connect the camera, and enter the corresponding access password. In the event that we are going to connect it by cable, we select this option and we will go to the next menu because a password is not necessary.
  5. The camera will be linked with the cloud automatically, then we can set the name of the device and even a contact designated by us to quickly call you in case of motion and/or sound detection.
  6. We will activate cloud recording absolutely free for the first year, a new automation rule will be created by default.
  7. We have a pole or wall mount guide, with a level included to turn our smartphone into a horizontal and vertical level.
  8. Automatic setting of privacy mode in “Home”, “Away” and “Sleep”.

In case we have a mydlink subscription and we have gone from cameras with cloud recording, it will invite us to upgrade to the superior plan to enjoy recording with more cameras simultaneously.

Finally, the camera will notify us if we have any firmware update for the camera, click on “Update now” and the update process will begin, which will last approximately 5 minutes. After this waiting time, we can access the camera to view it and make all the configurations that we want.

In the following video you can see the entire process, which lasts approximately 6 minutes, and it is really easy and very fast to add a new camera to mydlink.

As you have seen, the installation process is really easy and fast. What has impressed us the most is the assembly guide incorporated in the installation wizard, something that we had not seen so far, in fact, it includes up to a software “level” to use our smartphone without the need for additional tools.
