Make these changes to your WiFi instead of buying a repeater

Having a good internet connection is important and is not always possible. Sometimes the coverage is bad, we see that the speed is very slow or cuts appear when we connect wirelessly. One of the options we have is to buy a Wi-Fi repeater. This helps improve signal quality. Now, sometimes this is not necessary. In this article we are going to tell you about some changes you can make to your Wi-Fi before you buy anything.

Changes to improve Wi-Fi

What we are looking for in a wifi network it is that it has good coverage and we can connect from afar, that the speed is adequate and also that there are no cuts. But when any of this fails, one option we often consider is buying a wireless repeater. But we do it without first analyzing what is the reason for the problem and sometimes we do not need to spend money.

Better locate the router

The first thing you can do is place in a better position the router. If you have it in an isolated room, it is surrounded by other appliances or it has walls around it, that is going to be a problem to be able to connect from afar. That would result in very weak coverage and limited speed.

You can try to change the router to another more central place, from where it distributes the signal well. Make sure there are no other electronic devices around and it is not covered by anything. If you put it in an elevated location, the better so that it can distribute the wireless signal.

Choose another Wi-Fi band

Another small change you can make to improve Wi-Fi coverage is to simply switch bands. Current devices can connect both to the band of the 2.4GHz as well as that of the 5GHz. The first one is the best when connecting from further away, although the speed is limited. On the other hand, the second one is ideal to obtain the maximum speed near the router.

Perhaps you are browsing from the 5 GHz band and you are very far away and therefore the coverage is weak. Or, the opposite case, that you are close and you are using the 2.4 GHz band instead of the other and you are not going to achieve the maximum speed.

Differences between 2.4 and 5 GHz

Check that you are not using a saturated channel

You may be connected to a wifi channel that it is saturated. This is something that does not depend only on you, but on your neighbors. If you are using a specific one that is used by other nearby routers, this can lead to it being saturated and the coverage and speed are not adequate and you have to choose a different one.

This happens especially in the 2.4 GHz band and not so much in the 5 GHz band. Therefore, you can search for the best Wi-Fi channel and thus avoid problems. This can be of great help to have a better connection.

Check that there are no hardware limitations

Perhaps the problem is not with the Wi-Fi network, but with possible hardware limitations. For example, your computer may not be able to work faster or it may have a very limited antenna and that does not allow coverage to arrive well. In that case, even if you buy a Wi-Fi repeater, the problem will still be there.

What you should do is verify that the network card used by your computer is adequate. For example, you can approach the router to do a speed test there and see if the problem is coverage. You can also see if using an external network card improves.
