Smartphones soon forced to display the energy performance of their battery

We are already used to it on household appliances with labels indicating the energy performance of the equipment we are about to buy. It will soon be the same for smartphones. The technology developed by the French company SmartViser was chosen to measure it.

SmartViser which is the first company to have developed a smartphone battery assessment was selected by the European Commission to ensure the energy labeling of mobile phones and tablets. This equipment will be assigned a grade from A to G depending on the score obtained. This label should make its appearance in 2022 and would be made compulsory in 2023. It will allow us to see how smartphones have been optimized to make the best use of the capacities of their batteries, capacities which tend to increase over time.

Indeed, for several years, the sizes of batteries have continued to increase in order to meet our intensive use. While in 2013 the average capacity of a smartphone battery was around 3400 mAh, at the end of 2020, the average capacity of the batteries fluctuated between 4000mAh and 5000mAh.

And it is likely that shortly, the standard capacity of the batteries will be 6000mAh. This trend is driven by two main factors: on the one hand, consumer demand for longer battery life and on the other hand, technological advances with materials such as graphene that are likely to change a lot. things.

A bigger battery doesn’t always mean more runtime

We can therefore imagine that a larger battery should make it possible to increase its lifespan, however in view of the observations made by SmartViser over the past 12 months, this may not be the case. Simply increasing the size of the battery without making other improvements will not improve its optimal performance.

In his lab, SmartViser has tested mobiles with a 5000mAh battery which have a lifespan of between 3.5 days and 1.5 days for the less efficient. The significant performance gap comes a lot from the R&D efforts that manufacturers have implemented to improve the autonomy of their products. Chips and operating systems also aim to become more energetically self-sufficient. But there is still a lot of work to be done to improve the power management of the mobile instead of increasing the size of the battery, which requires more precious metals and harms the environment.

The SmartViser solution, a benchmark in energy performance

The society SmartViser, at the origin of the innovative “viSer” test solution, is working on enhancing the autonomy of smartphone batteries and working closely with smartphone manufacturers to improve this performance.

It was in 2014 that SmartViser launched “viSer” to help smartphone manufacturers, mobile operators and the media to test, monitor, evaluate, troubleshoot and measure the quality of use of their products and networks. Thanks to a unique technology, the power of viSer makes it possible to test mobiles in the same way as an end user uses his phone, a reflection of the real use.

It is thanks to this technology that the Label ViserMark was born in 2020. It is the first industry label providing true battery life scores to help users when buying a new cell phone. It also allows smartphone manufacturers to identify any weak points in their battery performance and therefore improve their quality.

Energetic efficiency : does my cell phone consume little energy?

This simply means getting the most out of your smartphone while reducing the energy consumed and with limited impact on battery life. The calculation is made from the battery life and capacity. This label is materialized by “Sheets” which classify energy efficiency from 1 to 5 for the most efficient. The mobile with the best energy capacity will allow to have a satisfactory battery life and reduce the number of recharges, which affect the durability of the battery.

Battery performance: how does this mobile compare to others?

This performance score ranges from 0 to 100. It reflects the performance of a mobile on the basis of independent, repeatable and precise tests. The calculation is made from the results of Battery Life, Energy Efficiency and Charging.

Battery life: what is the battery life of this mobile?

This label is expressed in “day of use” and reflects the duration of use of the smartphone from a full charge of the battery. The ViserMark label transposes the mAh (milliamperes / hour), generally used to measure the capacity of a smartphone battery, into a more meaningful logo: in number of days of actual use.

Battery charging time: how long does it take to charge this mobile?

The charging time of a mobile varies according to the type of battery and its size. It is expressed in hours and minutes.
