These are the most common errors if you use Ethernet cables

Ethernet network cable connectivity is one of the favorites by users for many reasons, for example, we will be able to take full advantage of the fiber optic bandwidth, we have greater connection stability with low jitter, and we will even have the minimum possible latency. However, if you don’t usually connect via network cable to your router or switch, you may run into some errors that are common. Today at RedesZone we are going to explain what the most common errors are, and how we can solve them.

Frequent errors and solutions

Connect to the Internet by ethernet network cable It is the most recommended if you want the best performance, however, it also has its unexpected problems if we do not know well how the different standards work, the wiring requirements, etc. Next, we are going to show you the most common mistakes we make when using network cables.

Cables with only 4 wires

Old network cables only had 2 pairs of wires (4 wires), however, today all network cables have a total of 4 pairs of wires (8 wires), in order to achieve Gigabit speeds or higher. If you use old wiring, you will not be able to synchronize at a speed greater than the maximum 100Mbps that it supports. This is something that you must take into account, you cannot take an old network cable from 15 years ago and use it with the new fiber optic connection, because you will encounter the problem that the speed is limited to 100Mbps of synchronization, which is Actual 94Mbps.

The solution in this case is to buy a network cable with 4 pairs of wires, either Cat5e or higher, although our recommendation is that it be Cat 6.

Cabling with lower category than necessary

When we have very high fiber optic speeds, 1Gbps and even 10Gbps, it is essential to look at the category of Ethernet network cable. In principle, the Cat 5e category should provide a real speed of about 2.5Gbps without too many problems, since it supports Multigigabit speeds. However, it is very important that you check the speed that reaches you, because the cable may not be of very good quality.

Our recommendation if you are going to use your computer by cable, and you have a FTTH bandwidth of 1Gbps or higher, is to buy Cat 6 or higher category cables, as we have recommended on many occasions.

Random cuts in the connection

If you have random cuts in the cable connection, you should first think about whether the network cable is very long (more than 10 meters) or is it a relatively short network cable (less than 5 meters). If the network cable is short and you have random cuts, it is probably due to the RJ-45 connector that is badly crimped, or that it makes a bad connection and causes the network to drop. In case the network cable is long, the reason may be the same (the connector) or there is too much interference and crosstalk in the network cable.

Our recommendation in these cases is that you try another network cable, to rule out problems with the operating system and the network card, because the latter two could also be the ones causing the problem.

I can’t sync more than 100Mbps

If you can’t synchronize at more than 100Mbps, you should look at three things: the network cable that has 4 pairs of wires (8 wires), which ethernet network card supports Gigabit speeds, and that the router or switch where you are connecting the PC also has Gigabit Ethernet ports. In the event that any of these items do not meet the Gigabit requirements, it will automatically sync at a speed of 100Mbps.

If you have the correct network cable and you have made sure that your router has Gigabit ports, check the drivers of the Ethernet network card on your PC, because they are probably old and that is where the problem is that you do not synchronize at more than 100Mbps although everything else is correct.
