Why Wi-Fi extenders have a bad reputation

Wi-Fi repeaters don’t always work well

It is common for us to have wireless connection problems and let’s find something that improves it. For example if we need to connect from a room that is far from the router. The first thing that comes to mind is to buy a Wi-Fi repeater or extender. This, at least on paper, will help to have better coverage and fewer problems.

But of course, the problem is that this does not always happen. Is it the fault of the repeaters? Logically these devices will have certain limitations. However, when they malfunction in most cases it is due to a bad configuration of the users themselves. That will prevent them from receiving the signal well and we can connect wirelessly from further away.

Why do they have a bad reputation? What a Wi-Fi repeater really does is just that, repeat the signal it receives. We can’t expect to reach the same speed than if we connect directly to the router and are located next to it. This makes many users say that they are doing very badly, because they connect to the repeater side and receive little speed.

This mainly happens because misplace the extender or wireless repeater. If we place it very far from the router, where it will receive a very weak signal, what it really does is repeat that signal it is receiving. It’s not going to work miracles. For this reason, it is convenient to place it in a place where it receives the signal as well as possible and thus be able to distribute it to other devices without so much loss.

However, we can say that a Wi-Fi repeater is not the best solution to have Internet in very remote places. As you have seen, it has limitations that are sometimes impossible to overcome. For example, you will not be able to take the Internet optimally to another floor if the room from which you are going to connect is too far away and has many obstacles.

What alternatives to use

So, what alternatives can we use to connect to the Internet and have a good speed without resorting to a Wi-Fi repeater? An example are the PLC devices. Basically there are two devices: one you connect to the router and to electricity, while the other you put in another place in the house, also connected to a plug. This way you can take the connection from one area to another and there is less loss.

Another alternative are the mesh systems. In this case there are several devices that connect to each other. They are satellites that you distribute around the house and you manage to take the connection to different corners and you will have fewer problems than if you only use a repeater connected to the router.

In short, as you can see, Wi-Fi repeaters do not always work well. They can be a solution at a given time, but you can also take into account certain alternatives that will help improve the wireless connection at home. The goal is to be able to bring the Internet to other rooms.
