2025 is the start of a new era for League of Legends as Riot Games introduces Seasons—a new way of delivering content and gameplay that will drop players into thematic, story-driven experiences. Seasons will shape everything from champion releases to game modes, events and rewards, how you play the game all year round. Here’s the lowdown.
What are Seasons?
Seasons, changing it’s meaning from previous years, are a year long thematic arc divided into three chapters, each with two Acts. These arcs will drop players into the world of Runeterra by focusing on different regions and stories. Each Season will have its own narrative and theme that will influence most of League’s content including gameplay updates, champion releases, skins, mini-games and in-game events.
For example a Season might focus on a conflict in a specific region of Runeterra, with champion releases and skins tied to that story. Events will also reflect the Seasonal theme, pulling players deeper into the lore and visuals of the game world. While some traditions like Lunar Revel and April Fools will remain standalone, most of the content in 2025 will revolve around the central Seasonal theme, making for a cohesive experience.

New Client Look
The client is getting a refresh to match the new Seasonal focus. A more streamlined interface that prioritises usability and thematic immersion and less clutter.
At the centre of this is the Activity Center, a new homepage that focuses on the current Season. From here you can track your progress, participate in limited time events and follow the ongoing story. Whether you’re playing a Seasonal mini-game, ranked or exploring new champion releases the Activity Center will keep you in the loop.
Meanwhile news and patch notes are moving to an Info Hub. This will appear with each patch and will have updates on new champions, skins, cinematics, esports news and more. The Info Hub will keep the main interface clean while still giving you easy access to the important stuff.
New Battle Pass
With Seasons comes a complete overhaul of the rewards system starting with the replacement of the Event Pass with a new Battle Pass. This will be the central way players earn rewards throughout each Season, with a focus on simplicity and accessibility.
The Battle Pass will last for four patches, giving you more time to progress and less burnout. You’ll earn Battle Pass Experience (BXP) through regular gameplay and missions, with daily, weekly and Act long objectives to pursue. This will make the grind less repetitive and give you more flexibility to play how and when you want.
Rewards are also being simplified. Free pass players will get two skins per Act: one unique Seasonal skin and one random 1350 RP skin. Paid passes will get three more skins, a Prestige skin, borders, emotes and more. By removing excess currencies and redundant mechanics Riot is making rewards more clear and rewarding.
Streamlining Rewards and Systems
Riot is using this opportunity to tidy up several existing systems, removing complexity and confusion. For example the current way of earning and crafting skins is being reworked. Instead of skin shards and crafting materials you’ll earn skins directly through the Battle Pass. Hextech Chests will still be available for those who enjoy the thrill of randomness but Masterwork Chests and Event Tokens are being sunset to simplify the experience.
The Honor System is also getting a big overhaul. In the past Honor felt like an afterthought, with limited rewards that rarely felt impactful. Starting in 2025 Honor levels will directly impact rewards and social perks. High-Honor players will get more BXP and access to more social features while the Honor Shop and Honor Tokens will be retired.
Also Champion Mastery is being folded into the Battle Pass. You will no longer earn chests from Mastery milestones, instead these will contribute to your Battle Pass progression. This means all game modes including ARAM will be rewarded equally.
One Thematic Experience
One of the coolest things about Seasons is how they tie together gameplay, story and aesthetics. Each Season’s theme will influence not just champion skins and events but the very interface of the game. From the moment you log in to the client to the final Victory screen of a match you’ll feel connected to the Seasonal story.
For example a Season based on a Runeterran war might have skins of champions as soldiers, generals or spies, while game modes and events drop you into the conflict. Even the client visuals will reflect the theme and make you feel like you’re part of it.
A Better Future
At its heart the Seasons system is about a more cohesive, rewarding and fun experience for players. By simplifying systems, adding thematic consistency and focusing on player engagement Riot is setting the stage for a new era of League of Legends.
Whether you’re a free to play player looking to get more skins or a lore enthusiast wanting to explore Runeterra’s stories, 2025 Seasons have something for everyone. The first Season starts in January—get ready to jump in.
