5 mistakes you make with heating and make you spend a lot

5 mistakes when using heating

When winter approaches, something we usually do is prepare the heating. We put the radiators more and more frequently and that also translates into more consumption. But we can try to reduce it if we make some adjustments or change small habits.

Turn it off and on

A very common mistake is constantly turning the heating on and off. We think that by turning it off we are going to save, and although it is true that this happens we are going to spend even more when turning it on again. What happens is that the house temperature drops and when you put it back needs to consume resources.

It is especially a mistake to do this if the reason is that we are hot. We should never be too hot in winter if we really want to save. Therefore, the ideal is not to be constantly turning the heating on and off. If you are going to leave the house for several hours, then you should turn it off; but you shouldn’t turn it off if you’re going to be out for half an hour.

Put more temperature than necessary

It is another of the mistakes we make. We turn on the heating and set up a temperature too high. We really don’t need to be in short sleeves in January at home. In this way we would be wasting a lot of energy and spending more than necessary on the electricity or gas bill.

The ideal is to put the heating at a temperature in which we are comfortable, but without being excessive. 19-20 degrees is usually correct in winter during the day, while at night we can even lower it a few degrees more, in case you keep it on.

Not checking the radiators

Something you should do every year, whenever you are going to put the heating on for the first time, is to check that the radiators are working properly. If you don’t, you may be spending a lot more than you should. It is important that bleed the radiators to remove the accumulated air and that will cause greater consumption.

You should also check that there is nothing affecting the radiators. For example, it is a mistake that there is a piece of furniture or armchair right in front of it and it does not let the air pass. There should also be nothing covering them above. If that happens, you should rearrange the room where the radiator is and make changes.

Put it where it’s not needed

Possibly you have a room that you do not use at home or in which you do not usually be. However, you will have radiators scattered throughout the house. If you turn on the heating, all of them will automatically turn on even if they are in places where you do not need them to turn on.

What you should do is to turn off those that are not going to be really useful. For example, a room where no one sleeps and you only enter to get clothes or specific things. There you do not need to maintain the temperature.

Don’t take advantage of the heat

This is important and in many cases we do not take it into account. The house picks up temperature when we turn on the heating and that temperature will last a time. If we are going to leave the house, it is a mistake to turn off the heating just when we are going to leave. The ideal is to turn it off a while before, since it will more or less maintain the temperature and we will save something.

You should also take advantage of the heat in the hours and days when the temperature outside is higher. For example, if you are going to ventilate the house, do not do it first thing in the morning. Ideally, you should wait for an hour when the temperature is higher. The same if you are going to do cleaning, for example, take advantage of a sunny day with good weather and you will waste less.
