About half of the emails they send you are dangerous

The email we use it constantly in our day to day. It is used to contact other people or companies, but also to register on pages, receive information or stay up to date with news. Now, are all e-mails safe? The reality is no. In fact, a large part of what they send us is dangerous and must be taken into account in order to act correctly.

An email can be the worst threat

This is an analysis carried out by Hornetsecurity. They have detected that more than 40% of the emails they send us can be potentially dangerous. They can contain Spam, be a Phishing attack or directly have a file that is actually malware and thus steal passwords or infect the system.

It is true that not all of these emails end up reaching our inbox or even being visible. Luckily today the filters of the e-mail providers have improved remarkably and many junk mails end up in the Spam tray or are blocked. However, it is still a major problem and it is not uncommon for emails of this type to reach us.

This same report indicates that two of the types of threats that hackers usually send is the ransomware and also phishing. The first is intended to infect the computer and encrypt the files and the system to later demand a ransom in return. On the other hand, what Phishing is looking for is to defraud the victim in order to steal passwords or personal data.

However, although ransomware and Phishing are the most common and also dangerous, there are other attacks that we can suffer by email. For example, attachments that pretend to be a text document or an image and are actually a virus that infects the computer when downloaded, a keylogger that can record passwords, etc.

Tips to be protected

So, what can we do to be protected and not be attacked through email? The main thing will be common sense. The simple fact of receiving a dangerous e-mail will not affect our security. It does become a problem if we click on an embedded link, download an attachment, or even reply. One option to improve privacy is to send anonymous emails.

Therefore, the first thing is not to make any such mistake. It is best not to open any mail that may be suspicious and delete it directly. Much less do you have to download files or respond, although it may seem harmless.

Another issue to consider is the importance of having security programs. A good antivirus can help detect and eliminate possible viruses that we receive. Other tools such as a firewall or even browser extensions can also help to improve protection.

Also, having the updated equipment it will always be important. We need to update the operating system and avoid security flaws that can be exploited by cyber criminals. In many cases they will take advantage of this so that their attacks come to fruition.
