Google Fiber promises 100 Gbps speed
Google also has its own company to offer the Internet. Yes indeed, so far very limited although they hope to be able to expand and even reach other countries. In the United States, where it has been operating since 2012, it hit the table by offering 1 Gbps of symmetric fiber optics. That forced other operators to have to match them to be competitive. But soon after they launched their 2 Gbps download, albeit 1 Gbps upload service.
But the news now is that they have announced several more Gbps of symmetric fiber optics. In addition, they ensure that it will be at a competitive price. According to recent tests have already reached 20 Gbps. Without a doubt, it is a speed that far exceeds what the rest of the telephone operators can offer.
However, things do not stop there. The CEO of Google Fiber, Dinni Jain, has just said that in the coming months they may announce that they will increase the speed they offer by several Gbps, but that this is only part of the way to their goal of power. offer symmetrical 100 Gbps to his clients. We are talking about 100 times the maximum speed that we can currently hire, for example, in Spain.
Make sure that this milestone is closer than we think. They hope that in the coming weeks they will be able to transfer the laboratory tests to homes and offer Internet rates with speeds much higher than the current ones.
Do we need that much internet speed?
You may be wondering whether or not you really need symmetrical 100 Gbps of internet, as Google promises. Even without going any further, do we really need more than 1 Gbps? Surely we could ask ourselves that question 15 or 17 years ago, when we navigated below 1 Mbps.
Surely at that time we did not need at all to have the hundreds of symmetrical Mbps that we now achieve with fiber optics. Think that there were no video streaming services, the cloud was not something really used, nor did web pages need so much connection to load. Therefore, in the same way that today we see it as something really limited and that makes it almost impossible to navigate with less than 1 Mbps, perhaps in a few years we will think the same about 1 Gbps.
Yes it is evident that technology needs to change to be able to reach several Gbps in the Internet connection. It will not be enough to have a network card that supports up to 1 Gbps, or Wi-Fi adapters like we have now, not even current routers. All this will be a progressive change and it will take time to see 100 Gbps as something normal. Even now we can have problems getting the contracted speed.
