How much does a good WiFi or WiFi Mesh router cost to use at home

What price should a good router have?

Currently there are WiFi routers from manufacturers such as ASUS, AVM FRITZ!Box, D-Link or NETGEAR of different ranges, therefore, we will have different prices for these models. We believe that a maximum price of 150 euros it is more than enough to have a very good performance in our home, in this price range you will find models of routers and WiFi Mesh that have the following technical specifications. However, you must bear in mind that you will be able to use your old old router and take advantage of it.

Simultaneous dual band with Wi-Fi 6

Today it is essential that your new WiFi Mesh router or system have this wireless standard, because it is faster, we will have more wireless coverage and it is much more efficient if we connect dozens of clients simultaneously. In the price range of 100 and 150 euros, you will find AX1800 class models, this means that we can achieve a speed of up to 574Mbps in the 2.4GHz band and a speed of up to 1,201Mbps in the 5GHz band, thanks to the incorporation of two internal antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration.

You may find slightly higher range models, but in general, the models are of the AX1800 class and have two antennas, because incorporating an additional antenna per frequency band means increasing the cost of the router, so this is reserved for models above 150 euros. Is a higher Wi-Fi 6 class worth it? It depends on what you’re going to use it for, and if you have very fast wireless clients, it’s usually not necessary in a home environment. It is also very important to know where to place the router and get optimal coverage.

Gigabit Ethernet ports

If you want to maximize the speed of fiber optics at home, you should buy a router or WiFi Mesh that incorporates all the Gigabit Ethernet ports (at 1Gbps), both for the Internet WAN where we will connect the router of our operator or the ONT, as well as on the LAN, to provide wired clients on the local network with the best possible performance. In the event that you find a cheap router with Fast-Ethernet ports, you should know that you will get a maximum of 95Mbps, so it will be useless if you have a 300Mbps Internet connection.

In this price range we will not find models with 2.5G Multigigabit ports, so the most we aspire to in this price range are Gigabit Ethernet ports, which in the vast majority of uses will serve us perfectly.

USB 3.0 port

Generally, WiFi Mesh systems do not usually incorporate USB ports, however, there are high-end models that do incorporate this type of port. Routers between 100 and 150 euros generally have a USB 3.0 port, and even another USB 2.0 port. This type of connectivity will allow us to turn our router into a small NAS server, to share files and folders on the local network through Samba or FTP.

The USB 3.0 port will provide us with a good read and write speed, as long as the main processor of the router is powerful, otherwise, we will not be able to achieve high transfer rates.

What models with a maximum of 150 euros can I buy?

Currently D-Link is the king in routers and WiFi Mesh Low-cost, and we are going to be able to buy really interesting models for a very low price. For example, one of the WiFi meshes recently analyzed in RedesZone is the D-Link EAGLE PRO AI M15, a model that is AX1500 class with Gigabit Ethernet ports, and we can buy it for around €60 for each node. The manufacturer D-Link sells this model in a pack of 2 nodes and a pack of 3 nodes, then you can see the price of 190 euros for the pack of 3 nodes, in case you only need two nodes, you can buy the 2 node version.

Another highly recommended model is the D-Link R15 EAGLE PRO AI, it is the AX1500 class router model and Gigabit Ethernet ports, with a really cheap price and we can buy it for approximately 60 euros. This equipment does not have USB 3.0 ports, it is something that you should take into account, and it is a low-cost model. If you don’t need a USB port to share on the local network, this model is ideal for you.

You can combine this router with any equipment from the EAGLE PRO AI family to form a complete WiFI Mesh network, as with the M15 that we have seen before, and also the E15 model that is the wall repeater.

In the case of ASUS, the ASUS TUF Gaming TUF-AX5400 model is right now at a price of €160, it is a little over the €150 limit, but it is a purchase that we must recommend due to the great wireless and wired performance that it offers. has provided us in the tests, in addition, this model has a really complete firmware and is ideal for gaming.

A model that is very good and has a really exceptional price is the AVM FRITZ!Box 7530 AX, in the version with Wi-Fi 6 and AX2400 class. This available dual-band router with Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet ports, and also has a high-performance USB 3.0 port, thanks to its built-in powerful processor. The most remarkable thing about this model is that we have the FRITZ! OS firmware with a large number of configuration options, ideal to perfectly adapt to our needs. The price of this equipment on offer is around 150 euros, although the usual price is around 170 euros approximately.

As you can see, today we have very cheap models like the D-Link that will provide us with really high performance at home, however, if you want something more expensive like the ASUS or FRITZ! Box, these two models that we we have recommended are a wise purchase, especially since we have a really complete firmware with dozens of configuration options.
