How to configure the Windows firewall so that it does not block VPN

Does it block any VPN? The truth is that you could find yourself in the situation that Windows is blocking one that you have installed, but instead you try any other and that does not happen. It may detect it as a problem or that there is a bug in the configuration and it affects that specific application.

What to do to avoid it

What can we do so that Windows does not block the VPN? We are going to explain the steps in case you use the Windows firewall. There are many applications available and we could not cover all of them, but the steps are similar once you access the settings of the firewall that you have installed.

Create a new rule

The first thing you have to do, in both Windows 11 and Windows 10, is go to Start. there you have to search Windows Defender Firewall and you open it. That will take you to the program settings, where you can modify some parameters to avoid problems or change something that may interest you.

Windows Firewall Inbound Rules

you have to give Entry Rules, which appears at the top left. That will take you to a new window where many applications that you have installed on the system will appear. The VPN that is blocking the Windows firewall should appear there. But what you’re going to do is click on new rulewhich appears on the right.

New firewall rule

This allows you to create a rule for the firewall to act on. You can block or allow a port, a program, etc. In our case what we want is to allow a VPN through the Windows firewall, so we mark the option Programwhich is the first that appears in the list, and we click Next.

Select program in the firewall

In the next window, as you can see in the image, it will ask you to select the specific application. you have to give Review and access the route of that program, which in this case would be the VPN.

allow connection

Afterwards, you have to dial in allow connection and hit continue. You choose when the rule is applied, give it a name and click Finish. From that moment, you will have created a rule so that the Windows firewall does not block a VPN that you have installed and you can navigate through it normally.

View blocked apps

Another option you have is to go to Windows Defender Firewall, once again from the Start menu, and enter Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender. You will find a window with a list where you will see the applications you have installed.

Allow VPN in Windows Firewall

All you have to do is click on the button Change settings and that will enable to be able to block or not programs. You have to click on the button below Allow another app. That, as in the previous case, will open a new window to go to the path of that program, which would be the VPN, that you want to allow.

You just have to give Review, go to the VPN route and select it. You check the box so that the VPN can connect through the firewall, follow the steps and check so that it has access to the Internet. With that you will be able to see this program in the list of blocked applications, which in this case will appear without blocking.

It is an alternative to the previous option, very simple and fast. Just follow these steps and you’ll quickly be able to block or allow any programs in the Windows firewall, which can prevent problems if they don’t have access to the connection and can’t function properly.

Conclusions

In short, as you can see, it is possible that the Microsoft firewall, both in Windows 10 and Windows 11, is blocking the VPN. That is going to make it not work correctly, you will not be able to browse the Internet through this program and, ultimately, you will have problems connecting securely.

But this is something that you can solve in a simple way. We have explained how to allow a vpn can work through Windows firewall. There are a couple of options and in both cases you will be able to configure the system to allow or not allow an application to work and have access to the Internet.

This is something you can modify at any time. That is, maybe you want the Windows firewall to block a VPN that you have installed at a certain time. You can create a rule to act when you are connected to a private network, for example. This way will only work if you connect to public networks.
