Start a private Spotify session on Mac
Switching to a private session on your Apple Mac computer is easy. There are two ways to do this, and one is a shortcut. We will start with the longest route, just follow the steps I show you below:
- Start Spotify on your computer and tap your username at the top right of the home screen.
- Now, select «Setting» in the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down the “Settings” page to find the “Settings” section.Social«.
- Here, tap the switch adjacent to the option that says “Start a private session” to turn it green, and so you enable it.
- You will now notice a blue lock icon to the left of your username.
- Tapping this icon will inform you that you are in a private session.
The shortcut is like this:
- Tap your username at the top right of your Spotify window and select «Private session» to mark it.
- This will display the same blue lock icon next to your username that indicates you are in a private session.
Other semi direct access To start a private session on the PC is this:
- Click the ellipsis icon (three horizontal dots) in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Choose “Archive» in the drop-down menu and then click “Private session”.
- This will check the option and the blue lock icon will appear next to your username.
Start a private Spotify session on your mobile to hide music
There is no shortcut to a private session on mobile devices. There is an easy method through Spotify settings. To start a private session on your phone follow these steps:
- First open Spotify.
- Then, tap the icon with your image at the top left
- Click on the option «Setting
- Scroll down the page «Setting» to find the section «Privacy and Social».
- Here, press the button next to the option “Private session” so that it turns green.
- You will now run a private session on your phone’s Spotify. That’s it!
Turn off sharing Spotify listening activity
An alternative to a private session is to not share your listening activity with your followers. But when you turn off sharing your listening activity, your music activity cannot be tracked until the setting is enabled.
However, you can only have one of the two options. When you have a private session, the option to turn off sharing of your listening activity will be inaccessible and vice versa.
Turn off sharing of your listening activity on your computer.
- First click on your username at the top right of your Spotify window.
- Choose “Setting” on the menu.
- Now go to the section “Social” on the screen “Setting” and click the button next to the option «Share what I listen to on Spotify»a gray button corresponds to deactivating the configuration.

- Scroll through the window «Settings and privacy» up to section »Privacy and Social». Here, if the switch next to “What’s being heard” or “recently listened to artists” are green, tap them to turn them gray, thus disabling this setting.
- Your listening activity on both devices will be yours from now on.

Can friends see private playlists on Spotify?
Once you’ve made a private playlist in the mobile app, your friends won’t be able to see it. However, if you’ve only hidden it from your profile in the desktop app, they can do this. To avoid this, activate the private session to prevent them from seeing.
If your Spotify playlist is listed as public, anyone who views your Spotify profile can see it. If you make a private playlist through the mobile app, they can’t see it even if you’re listening to it.
