After enduring US sanctions since 2019, Huawei may well have found a way to buy components from US-based companies. The facial recognition of Pixel 7 and 7 Pro could not completely replace the use of the fingerprint sensor. Finally, WhatsApp has just launched a paid Premium subscription in the beta version of the application. Come on, let’s go for the recap of the day on Friday, October 7, 2022.

Huawei could use a start-up to circumvent its sanctions

To continue to manufacture smartphones with American technologies and therefore remain competitive with the competition, the Chinese giant Huawei could go through a start-up named Pengxinwei IC Manufacturing Co. to supply itself with chips. However, the latter is expected to be heavily controlled by the US government, so it remains to be seen how Huawei could carry out this plan.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro finally have facial recognition

After its abandonment since the Pixel 4, facial recognition is finally making a comeback on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. However, this would be quite limited, since it would be certified “Biometric class 1”. The system is therefore limited to unlocking smartphones, and cannot completely replace the fingerprint reader. We are thinking in particular of using the face for payments or confirming your identity in certain applications such as at Apple.

WhatsApp makes its application paid

Unsurprisingly, it was to be expected that Meta would one day seek to monetize its application with its multiple billion users. WhatsApp has just added a paid service “WhatsApp Premium” in the beta version of its application. Thanks to this subscription, you can for example share an account with 10 devices, or even share your address from a link with your customers if you are a company.
