Is a router with Wi-Fi 6 going to solve your poor Internet connection?

Having a good Internet connection is important to be able to navigate correctly, download files, use the cloud… It is not always possible and sometimes we have to acquire some devices to improve it. One of the options that we can consider is to buy a Wi-Fi 6 router, which is the latest Wi-Fi standard available and offers the highest speed. Now, is this really the solution? Will your connection always improve?

Why a Wi-Fi 6 router does not improve the problem

Wi-Fi 5 is a standard that appeared in 2013. Most devices around you that you have purchased in recent years will be compatible. The latest version, Wi-Fi 6, came with significant improvements. Especially improve speed, avoid interference, battery saving or security.

But of course, in many cases the problem you have is not going to be solved just by buying a router with Wi-Fi 6. It is true that in the right circumstances you will have more speed and stability, but doesn’t work miracles. Why do we say this? Think, for example, that the problem you have is due to poor coverage. The signal may not be able to reach a room that is too far from the router. Even if you buy a new one with Wi-Fi 6, the problem will really be there.

Another limitation is the internet fee that you have contracted If, for example, you have 300 Mbps fiber optics, no matter how much you buy a powerful router with Wi-Fi 6, that does not mean that you will have the maximum theoretical speed that the device supports. You will really be limited to the rate you have contracted.

You should also take into account the devices you are going to use. Are they compatible with Wi-Fi 6? It is useless to have a Wi-Fi 6 router, if the computer you are going to use to connect is not compatible. You will not be able to take full advantage of the resources it has to offer and your connection will not improve as you expect.

Alternatives to improve the connection

So what can we do to improve the Internet connection? An interesting option is to buy a device that improves coverage. For example a Wi-Fi repeater, a Mesh system or PLC devices. They all can do that the coverage is better to other areas of the house. The most recommended today is to buy a mesh WiFi system, because it will provide you with the best possible user experience by having seamless WiFi roaming throughout your home.

It is also a good idea that correctly locate the router. This small change can make your wireless connection much better. You could better distribute the signal to other places in the house. Whenever possible, locate it in a central area or, failing that, in a space where you are really going to take advantage of the wireless network.

Another option to improve the connection and not have problems is use network cable instead of Wi-Fi whenever possible. This will add stability, prevent the connection from dropping, and will also improve speed. However, this will not always be possible, since you will have to make an installation in your home to carry cables from one place to another.
