Learn how to fix Wi-Fi driver issues

A problem that many users face sooner or later is that, even if they have been using Wi-Fi for a long time without problems, there comes a time when it does not work or does not work well. Users cannot connect to the home or work Wi-Fi network normally. In some cases they have frequent outages and in others you can’t even connect or see Wi-Fi networks. From that moment on, tasks as essential as surfing the net, downloading a file or watching a video on YouTube become mission impossible. Typically, these types of failures are related to the software driver and to a lesser extent to the network adapter or router. In this article we are going to learn how to fix Wi-Fi driver issues.

First steps to check

In this case we are going to start by checking that we have Wi-Fi turned on in our router. We will check that it has the corresponding LED light on and if it is not, we will press the corresponding button.

Also other things we have to take into account:

  1. That we are connected to the 2.4GHz or 5 GHz band depending on whether we can use them or not and their distance. If we are far from the router, the 2.4GHz band is better, which is also compatible with all devices.
  2. The channel, since there are some adapters that by region prohibit the use of certain channels. If we have one since it does not support, it will not connect. We may also have a lot of interference with neighboring Wi-Fi networks, so we could consider changing the channel.

Problems with the old Wi-Fi driver

It is recommended to always have the most recent network adapter drivers for our operating system. This will fundamentally provide us with two advantages:

  1. We are going to be safer because security flaws are corrected.
  2. Sometimes they add new features or performance improvements.

For example, Windows 10 every 6 months offers us an important update with a series of improvements and new features. The drawback is that sometimes we have problems with the Wi-Fi driver because it is not fully compatible. So the solution is to update the driver of our Wi-Fi network adapter with the most modern one available. In addition, right now with the update to Windows 11 these types of problems are the order of the day.

These types of failures are more common than they seem, especially in network adapters and older equipment. One of them are the problems with 802.11n WLAN Driver that we could define it as an error that happens when a Wi-Fi network adapter that complies with the 802.11n standard stops working and we cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network. This type of problem with the Wi-Fi driver is seen a lot in computers that are more than 5 years old. Obviously we are going to have to install a current driver either from Windows or from the manufacturer’s website.

Reinstalling the driver as a last resort

Another thing we must do is double-click the network icon on the taskbar. There we will see if, for example, available Wi-Fi networks appear.

In the event that they did not do so, it may be because we have activated the Airplane mode. If we deactivate it and everything returns to normal, then we will have already found the fault. Also one thing to do if your Wi-Fi network adapter is USB is to remove it and reinsert it.

If we continue with problems we will go to the Device administrator of Windows. There we could try to reset the adapter in the section Network Adapters. If we continue with problems in the Wi-Fi driver selected ours, we will choose the option disable device. Next, we wait a bit and click on enable device.

Finally, if we still have problems, the solution is to reinstall the Wi-Fi driver.
