Sony has just presented its fiscal results and although not all of them are joyful for the Japanese giant, the business around PlayStation 5 is going well. More than good, one could say, and that is that the new generation console has tripled its sales in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period last year.
Thus, from the beginning of January to the end of March 2023, Sony has sold 6.3 million PS5s, more than triple compared to the same period last year, in which it barely placed 2 million units. Of course, it has done so at another time and having already overcome the shortage of components that weighed down the technology sector as a whole.
It should be noted in this regard that the best sales period for the Sony console was the previous quarter, in which 7.1 million units of PlayStation 5 were distributed, although the last quarter of each year is usually the one with the most Sales are carried out as a general rule, since the holiday periods and the most aggressive offers of the year take place (Black Friday, Christmas, etc.),
In any case, Sony can be satisfied because sales are stable and because have met objectives: Of the 19 million units that they expected to sell throughout the fiscal year, they have finally sold 19.1 million. In the same period of the previous year, console sales were 11.5 million.
Total, PlayStation 5 has already sold 38.4 million units, ranking as the most popular next-generation console on the market. According to not so updated data, PS5 would accumulate approximately 52% of console sales in 2023, with 32% for Nintendo Switch and 15% for Xbox Series (S/X). All in all, Xbox wouldn’t be doing too badly, with around 21-22 million units sold so far.
Continuing with PlayStation, the sale of software is not going so well, where the total has fallen compared to last year from 70.5 to 68 million games, counting those sold for PS 4 and PS4. On the other hand, the number of subscribers to PlayStation Plus has reached 47.4 millionimproving the data of the previous quarter and practically equaling the entire previous year.
In summary, the trend shown in Europe at a global level is confirmed, somewhat more demure, but ultimately positive. In the absence of more news, several of which come, by the way, from within Sony, including PlayStation Vita 2 and a future PS5 Slim, no major movements are expected in the sector in the remainder of the year.
