QNAP half-width in-rack switches and benefits of owning one

As you can see, in certain scenarios it is very interesting to have this type of equipment, especially in small and medium-sized companies where the racks do not usually have too many U to install equipment, because we do not have a specific equipment room for this purpose. but it can perfectly be in the same room where you work.

QNAP Half Width Switches

Right now we have different models for small and medium-sized businesses, depending on our needs in terms of port speed, and whether or not we need PoE technology, we can purchase one model or another. Next, we explain what the models are and their main characteristics.

QSW-M2106R-2S2T

This manageable switch from the manufacturer QNAP is a really interesting model because it has all its multi-gigabit portsand even has multiple 10G ports to provide the highest possible speed on the professional local network. The main characteristics of this model are the following:

  • 2 SFP+ ports at 10Gbps.
  • 2 10GBASE-T Multigigabit ports.
  • 6 2.5G Multigigabit ports
  • One Gigabit Ethernet port for out-of-band management.

Other specifications of this model are that it has a 110Gbps switching capacitywith a 55Gbps full non-blocking throughput. Also, we have a MAC address table of up to 16K entries and support for Jumbo Frames. This equipment has 2 smart fans to properly cool the equipment. Regarding the dimensions of this model, it is 43.3cm high, 20.7cm wide and 24.88cm deep, this means that it has a medium width to place another model of similar dimensions right next to it.

Regarding the configuration options available in the manageable firmware, we have the possibility to configure VLANs, QoS, manage ports individually, configure Link Aggregation, IGMP Snooping and we can even configure ACLs based on IP and MAC addresses. The firmware built into this switch is the same as other QNAP models, nothing has changed in this regard.

QSW-M2106PR-2S2T

This manageable switch is exactly the same as the previous model, but in this case we have PoE++ in all copper ports, that is, in all RJ-45 ports we have PoE++ to provide a power of up to 90W for each of the ports . The main characteristics of this model are the following:

  • 2 SFP+ ports at 10Gbps.
  • 2 10GBASE-T Multigigabit ports with PoE++ support to provide up to 90W per port.
  • 6 2.5G Multigigabit ports with PoE++ support to provide up to 90W per port.
  • One Gigabit Ethernet port for out-of-band management.

This equipment has a maximum PoE Budget of up to 310W, so we will be able to power a large number of equipment simultaneously, such as professional APs, IP cameras and many other equipment. Thanks to PoE++ we are not going to have any kind of problem powering equipment that uses this power standard through the Ethernet network cable. The rest of the specifications are the same as the previous one, we have a switching capacity of 110Gbps, a non-blocking performance of 55Gbps, a MAC address table of up to 16K and support for Jumbo Frames. As for the dimensions, they are 43.3cm high, 20.7cm wide and 24.88cm deep, so we also have medium width.

The firmware configuration options are the same as above, as usual.

QSW-M2108R-2C

This other QNAP model also has a medium width, perfect for placing two different models that provide us with the service we need. The main characteristics of this model are the following:

  • 2 Combo ports at 10G (SFP+ and RJ-45).
  • 6 2.5G Multigigabit ports.
  • One Gigabit Ethernet port for out-of-band management.

Thanks to the Combo ports, we will have great versatility. This model has a switching capacity of 80Gbps, with a total non-blocking throughput of 40Gbps. This kit also has a MAC address table of up to 16K entries and support for Jumbo Frames. It has 1 smart fan to cool it properly. The dimensions are 43.3cm high, 20.7cm wide and 19.95cm deep, this means that it has a medium width to place another model of similar dimensions right next to it.

Regarding the available configuration options, it has the same options as the previous ones. We have VLANs, QoS, advanced port management, LACP, IGMP Snooping, IP and MAC based ACLs, as well as RSTP.

As you can see, the manufacturer QNAP has several models of medium width, which will allow us great versatility and advantages because it will only occupy half of 1U, and we can complete it with another model with different characteristics.
