Unboxing of this SD-WAN router with 10G

The manufacturer QNAP has not only specialized in NAS servers, but for some years now, it has also launched different models of routers focused on the field of small and medium-sized companies. Today we are going to teach you everything about the QNAP router QHour-322a really powerful model and that is SD-WAN, so we can configure its ports as WAN or LAN through the firmware. This router incorporates a truly complete operating system, perfect for providing a large number of options at the network level. Do you want to know the main features of this router and what options are available in the firmware?

Main features

QNAP has launched the QHora-322 model to be the main router in any small and medium-sized business, yes, we do not have WiFi connectivity, because we only have cable and USB connections. It is an aspect to take into account, and it is that the most normal thing in a small and medium-sized company is to have PoE switches and WiFi access points, therefore, QNAP has focused specifically on the core of the network.

This new router incorporates a powerful Marvell CN9130 processor which is a 2.2GHz Quad-Core of speed, in addition, it incorporates a total of 4GB of DDR4 RAM. Other features at the hardware level is that we have a 4GB eMMC FLASH memory and also 4MB of SPI NOR Flash.

Wired and USB Features

This new router incorporates a total of 3 10GBASE-T ports at a speed of 10GbpsIn addition, through the firmware we can configure these ports as WAN or LAN, depending on our needs. We also have a total of 6 2.5G Multigigabit ports at 2.5GbpsOf course, in this case we could also configure the ports as WAN or LAN, depending on what we need. Thanks to the SD-WAN technologywe can have one WAN and even several, to have load balancing or failover of the connection.

This kit also incorporates one 5Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, that is, the typical USB 3.0 port. We can use this port solely and exclusively for storage and use the FTP server that is incorporated into the firmware. We can’t use this port to put a 3G/4G modem because it won’t work.

firmware

The firmware of this QNAP QHora-322 is really complete, it will allow us to configure the wired network in detail as we want. Next, you can see all the functions that we are going to be able to carry out at the level of ports with wired network:

  • We can define if we want to use a certain port as WAN or as LAN.
  • We can configure the WAN in an advanced way to connect with all operators.
  • Configuration of VLANs in the LAN, to segment the local network correctly and use manageable switches for it.
  • We have the possibility of registering static routes to reach other networks.

Regarding VPN that this router supportssupports the protocol L2TP, QBelt (a QNAP proprietary protocol) and also supports both OpenVPN as WireGuard. We are going to be able to configure the IP address of the VPN clients, manage the status of the users in a quite advanced way, view the connection logs and even incorporate a VPN client based on OpenVPN, to connect this router to a remote server.

Other very important features related to VPNs is that we have QuWAN QVPN, so we are going to be able to create a fairly advanced configuration to communicate the headquarters of different companies, and all this in a fairly simple way, without the need to configure the VPN. A very important feature of QuWAN QVPN is that it incorporates a Mesh VPN, therefore, if one of the “nodes” goes down, it will send the traffic through another route, so as not to have any security problems.

Below, you can see a complete unboxing video and first impressions of this high-performance router:

Soon in RedesZone we are going to offer you a complete analysis of this high-performance router, where we will test the LAN-LAN, LAN-WAN performance, speed between VLANs created and with the “bridge” mode. Of course, we will also test the performance of the built-in USB 3.0 port. Finally, we are going to focus specifically on the VPN part, especially on the OpenVPN server and WireGuard to see what real performance we get.
