VOD news 32/22: ‘Sandman’, the vigil of Morpheus

VOD News brings you the best releases of the week on Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+… And it shows that the holidays have arrived -for some, at least-, because we are premiering almost everywhere. But how Sandman there is only one…

Netflix

We start with Netflix, which aside from the usual rubbish, delights us this week with one of its most anticipated releases: nothing more and nothing less than Sandmanalthough it is not the only thing that we highlight.

Sandman

Has arrived Sandman. Netflix has released one of its most anticipated series, the adaptation of probably Neil Gaiman’s most popular creation, and look how successful the guy is. Of the largest, however, Sandman It was the one that remained to be transferred to the big or small screen and it was quite a challenge, according to those who understand the subject. I am not one of them.

I’ve read Neil Gaiman comics, but no Sandman, so I can not assess whether the adaptation is faithful or is well run. That there has been discord over typical character changes, including gender and race changes, is a given. How does it affect adaptation… I said: no idea. but i didn’t read either Song of ice and fire and enjoy Game of Thrones.

So the only thing I can say about Sandman, having seen just a couple of chapters, is that finally Netflix seems to have hit something. I’m not the only one, moreover: critics and audiences are quite happy, judging by what can be read out there, something not very common when it comes to complex cult works and with delicate changes for some, as is the case.

If, like me, you have never opened a page of Sandman, let me tell you that they have scratched their pockets: about 165 million dollars would have cost the production and although it may seem that money is not everything, it helps a lot. For the rest, it is a fantastic story that goes very well and that we hope will have continuity.

Sump

Fantasy not your thing? If you are more worldly and prefer a good host, before a spell, take a look at Sumpa Korean action movie that Netflix just got and that doesn’t look bad.

The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie

And finally, so that there is a little for all audiences, here is The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Moviea new animated feature film -in addition, with a very particular drawing- for lovers of these classics.

Disney+

We continue with Disney +, where very little is released, but well matched, which could be said in other circumstances.

Predator: The Prey

The premiere of the week on Disney + is Predator: The Prey, a new installment of the veteran action franchise that takes the story to the Comanche Nation of the 18th century, where a rebellious teenager (are there any other in these movies?) will face the bicharraco. The truth is that despite the gap that is marked, otherwise typical in the genre, it is entertaining, the action scenes are achieved and the setting is unbeatable. If instead of shooting it in English, they had done it in a native language, in the style of apocalypse I would have won whole.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is also making its debuts and in more ways than one: we highlight the novelty, but don’t miss out on what’s coming into the catalogue, especially if you’re a Tolkien fan and have a 4K TV (you don’t need to add anything else, right? )

thirteen lives

The big premiere of the week on Amazon Prime Video is thirteen lives, the feature film story of the true event that happened a few years ago, in which a Thai children’s soccer group got stuck in a cave during an outing due to rain. You have to remember, because the topic went around the globe and kept everyone on edge due to the extremely complicated rescue, in which a group of expert American divers took part, played in this adaptation, among others, by Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the rings, Green Book), Colin Farrell (Alexander the Great, Total challenge) or Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, the underground railway).

AppleTV+

We are ending with Apple TV +, which… yes, it also comes with premieres up its sleeve and curious, at least. Or maybe we should say premiere, in the singular, because the other is the second season of one of his series.

lucky

the premiere is lucky, an animated film in the purest Pixar style, not only visual, but narrative, in what is his most ambitious commitment to date in this genre. In other words… the critics are giving him their due, it’s not so easy to catch up with the masters right off the bat. But it’s a start.

hbo max

And yes, yes, we end with HBO Max, topical these days for different news, but with hardly anything new to offer its subscribers. For the next.
