WiFi everywhere? This is how Amazon’s super Internet will be

Amazon Satellite Internet

Amazon’s goal is to offer fast internet at any point in the world. To do this, it will install 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit. It is going to carry out dozens of launches and wants the connection to be up to 1 Tbps and for these satellites to be in orbit for about seven years before they need to be replaced.

will have different land terminals, which is basically the device that users will use to connect. One of them, the smallest and most manageable, will weigh about half a kilogram. The speed they expect to offer is 100Mbps, which is pretty good for normal browsing. For example, you will be able to watch Netflix in maximum quality anywhere, since it requires about 25 Mbps.

It will also have a slightly larger design to offer speeds of about 400Mbps. This is the ideal to have in a home or business. We can say that it is a fairly common fiber optic speed that we have today in Spain, although we can always contract other superior options.

On the other hand, you will have a third, larger and more expensive option to achieve up to 1Gbps. This case will not be the usual for a home, but will be used in boats and similar places where there is no other option.

Available soon

At the moment it is not known what price these devices will have, but it is expected that don’t be cheap at least for the first few years. In a couple of months it will launch the first two satellite prototypes, although mass production of satellites is expected to be in the first half of 2024.

Therefore, there is still time before we can make use of the Amazon satellites to have Internet. Over the next few months, mass production will begin and we will be closer to being able to contract their services and have a connection anywhere in the world with at least 100 Mbps speed.

Will we connect to internet via satellite in the future as usual? The truth is that today this technology is far from being profitable for everyone. Only in specific cases in which it is necessary to connect anywhere, such as mountaineers, does it really make it worth hiring it. In addition, the cost of launching the satellites is quite high and requires constant updates.

In short, having satellite Internet anywhere is going to be more and more accessible, but there is still time for the new Amazon service to be available. Keep in mind that having Internet on a flight is also complicated nowadays.
