Indeed, from Meta they have confirmed that over the next five years they are going to make a significant investment in Spain, both in terms of infrastructure and R&D and the hiring of highly qualified personnel. These plans include, in addition to the construction of the aforementioned data center and the hiring of two thousand people, the establishment of its first Meta Lab in Spain. Specifically, in Madrid.
The Meta Lab will be the base of operations for Meta’s remote workers in Spain, although it will also offer space to local entrepreneurs related to the technology sector, as well as small startups. In addition, the company is going to double its office space in Madrid. But also, thanks to a collaboration with Telefónica, it will open a metaverse innovation center in Madridfocused on accelerating the metaverse network and preparing devices for it.
But Meta’s plans for Spain do not stop here, as they are also related to improving the country’s connectivity infrastructure. Thus, they have confirmed that the first transatlantic submarine cablehalf a petabit, and the so-called 2Africa, will make landfall in Spain and will thus connect the country with the other side of the Atlantic and Africa, as well as with various points in Europe. With both, Spain will become an important point for the improvement of European connectivity. They will join Marea, which is already in operation, and unites Spain and the United States.
Apart from all this, from Meta they have assured that they will also explore possible collaborations with government and educational entities, as well as with various sectors of technology and industry. Always focused on the work for the development of the metaverse and everything related to its privacy, security and diversity.
To talk about all these plans, Javier Oliván, Vice President of expansion and infrastructure of Metahas met with President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez. In Meta they point out that «Spain is at the forefront of technology in Europe, and benefits from having two consolidated technology hubs in Barcelona and Madrid, as well as new ones in Valencia and Andalusia«. The company also reflects its knowledge of the situation of the technology sector in Spain, since they point out that the country «is registering record levels of investment in startups that solve all kinds of problems, from merchandise delivery to neuroelectronics«.
Oliván recalled that «Spanish was the first non-English language on Facebook back in 2007«, in addition to underlining that the company began operating in Spain in 209 and that they opened their first office in the country in 2015. All this means that for the company, Spain has advantages that «makes it natural for us to invest here«.
