a very stable tricycle… and very fast!

Can the tricycle be the future of two wheels? It seems inconceivable, yet Arcimoto’s bet is to change perspectives with the Mean Lean Machine.

The American manufacturer Arcimoto has lifted the veil on the Mean Lean Machine (MLM), an astonishing tricycle that is as much a bicycle as an electric motorcycle, but… with three wheels, of course. The main characteristic of the vehicle is that it is particularly manoeuvrable. It benefits from tilting technology which gives it great stability when cornering.

Peak performance

Each wheel benefits from its own hub motor, allowing the vehicle to have an all-wheel drive force unmatched by conventional electric bicycles. However, this is not the only particularity of the MLM, which also incorporates a pedal generator which produces electricity when stationary and during the effort on the road. The pedals are also not connected to any of the three-wheel drive. However, it can be used for speed control.

As for the engine, Arcimoto does not provide any details but it should be a standard VAE engine… But very fast all the same, since the manufacturer announces a top speed of 120 km/h! It is highly unlikely that such a bike will receive approval in France… Logically, the battery can be recharged from the mains, in addition to the driver’s pedal strokes. It has an impressive range of 320 km.

This very promising tricycle on paper can carry up to two people. Unfortunately, it should remain confined to the few countries that allow such cars on their roads… Pre-orders have nevertheless started, with a (refundable) deposit of $100. The “real” price has not yet been announced, the marketing is planned for the end of the year.
