AMD EPYC Genoa will support up to 12 TB of DDR5 memory

About a month ago we saw the presentation of EPYC Genoa, a new generation of high-performance processors for servers that will use the Zen 4 architecture, and with which AMD promises mark a major turning point in performance, both single and multi-core, and also in terms of supporting the latest industry standards.

AMD EPYC Genoa will maintain the MCM design that we have seen in the entire Zen series, and the figure of the chiplet will continue to be key, but it will bring important improvements at the architecture level that will translate into a notable increase in the IPC, it will use the TSMC 5nm node and it will increase the maximum of cores and threads. Currently, the maximum offered by the AMD EPYC processors based on Zen 3 is 64 cores and 128 threads, figures that, with EPYC Genoa, will go up to 96 cores and 192 threads.

Thanks to a recent leak, we have also been able to know that the new AMD EPYC Genoa processors will raise the bar when it comes to RAM memory, and I am not saying this because they will be compatible with the DDR5 standard, but because they will support up to 12TB 5,200MHz DDR5, and will be able to work with configurations of twelve channels. To give you an idea of what this means, it is enough to remember that, until relatively recently, eight-channel configurations were “quite the novelty.”

We still do not have specific details on the memory controller that AMD will use, but it is likely that this maximum speed spike is reduced based on the memory slots that are in use. Thus, if we have a configuration of 24 full RAM slots, the maximum memory speed would be 4,000 MHz, at least according to the source of the news.

The launch of the AMD EPYC Genoa processors will take place in 2022. We do not yet have a specific date, but it is most likely that its debut will take place in the middle of that year, since the arrival of EPYC Bergamo is expected for the first quarter of 2023, a generation that will use the Zen4c architecture and that will have a maximum of 128 cores and 256 threads. To use both generations it will be necessary to buy a new motherboard, due to the introduction of a new socket.
