AMD to invest in R&D in Ireland to strengthen Xilinx operations

One year after AMD bought Xilinx, finally the plans to develop the semiconductor ecosystem that Xilinx had already created in Ireland. To this end, AMD has announced that it has plans to invest 135 million dollars over the next four years.

This amount will go towards various strategic research and development projects in Ireland, at Xilinx facilities in Dublin and Cork.

Therefore, AMD will support the R&D projects that Xilin has in the country, as well as other future ones, focused on the development of technology for data centers, networks, 6G infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, AMD will hire an additional 290 engineers and researchers, along with creating several additional support positions.

These plans, as we have mentioned, come a year after the purchase of the semiconductor company without factory Xilinx, for which AMD paid 49,000 million dollars. Xilinx has had its chip manufacturing and engineering operations in Ireland since 1994, when it launched its facility, one of the company’s first outside the United States.

This purchase is, for AMD, a way to boost and support its ability to serve AI workloads to data centers, especially in the field of machine learning. Prior to becoming part of AMD, Xilinx had partnered several times with the Irish Industrial Development Agency, IDA, with the goal of advancing semiconductor innovation in the country.

Ireland has become one of the main research and development points for AMD in Europe, and currently oversees the production of various semiconductors from there, both for computing and communications. This investment, originally intended for Xilinx, reinforces its weight for the company.

Ruth Cotter, AMD Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Human Resourceshas recalled that «By increasing investment, and expanding our presence in Dublin and Cork, we are committed to further driving innovation in Ireland and further supporting the European semiconductor ecosystem. With this investment, our research and development teams in Ireland will design innovative, high-performance, adaptive compute engines to accelerate data centers, networks, 6G communications and embedded solutions, while achieving a leadership position in Artificial Intelligence.«.
