Apple is testing the new Mac Pro, but the M2 Extreme SoC is up in the air

The giant of the bitten apple already has the new Mac Pro in its test laboratory, a team that will be aimed at the professional sector and that according to the latest rumors I was going to have the SoC M2 Extremea very powerful chip that had everything to become one of the most powerful in its class, but in the end it would have been cancelled.

The information comes from Bloomberg, one of the most reliable sources in the sector, and leaves us with other interesting details. First of all, it is important to remember the specifications of the M3 SoC to better understand why it would have been cancelled. As I have already said, this SoC was going to have everything to become one of the most powerful in its category, and its specifications were impressive: 48-core CPU and GPU with 152 graphics cores.

However, to bring a solution of this level to life, Apple had to face very important challenges both at the level of design and production and costs, and in the end all this would have ended up surpassing Apple for its complexity. Consequently, the apple company would have chosen to reduce its ambitions and limit itself to the use of the Apple M2 Ultra SoC, which has a 24-core CPU and 76-core GPU configuration.

A Mac Pro with that Apple M2 Extreme SoC too it would have had a very high price (there is talk of 10,000 dollars or more)something that is not a problem for the apple company, but that certainly would have made that product difficult to position and sell even for the Cupertino giant, and therefore not worth the development costs and of production that it implied.

The new Mac Pro is expected to debut sometime in 2023, and that it comes accompanied by the SoC M2 Ultra, as we have said, with a configuration of up to 24 CPU cores and 76 GPU cores. The rest of its specifications have not been indicated yet, but it is most likely that the base version of said equipment has at least 192 GB of unified memory.

We don’t have details about the sale prices, but you already know that the Mac Pro is not a cheap device, and that even in its most adjusted configurations the price is going to be high. We can use the current model as an example, which was launched in December 2019 and costs 6,499 euros in its base configuration.
