Apple’s AR/VR headset reaches a milestone in its development

Supply chain sources say Apple is making progress on its AR/VR headset. It could soon go into production.

Expected for many years, Apple’s augmented and virtual reality headset is getting closer. In any case, this is indicated by DigiTimes, which was able to approach the supply chain to obtain information. The Taiwanese site claims that the Cupertino company has taken an important step by validating the second phase of the eengineering validation test (EVT2). This test confirms that the prototype works correctly and meets expectations. This crucial step is also to work on the design of the device.

After technical validation, the next step for Apple is the Design Validation Test (DVT). During this phase, the company will make changes to get closer to the final design and perfect its helmet. It is during this stage that resistance tests (drops, dust, water, etc.) are carried out. For the company, it is also time to get closer to its suppliers to produce the various parts needed. Upon arrival, Apple must be able to deliver prototypes that have full functionality.

In production this summer?

If no major defect is found, the augmented or virtual reality headset can go into mass production. Apple could reach this level during the summer and start producing its headphones in August or September, for a launch at the end of 2022. Nevertheless, this forecast is optimistic and several observers are counting on a release in 2023. This is particularly the case of Bloomberg and its reporter Mark Gurman.

Conversely, analyst Min-Chi Kuo continues to claim that this highly anticipated product will arrive before the end of the year. In any case, everything suggests that the Californian firm is getting closer to its goal in terms of hardware and software. We recently learned that Apple is working on realityOS, a new operating system for mixed reality. The Apple brand helmet could also be offered with a subscription.

Apple could discuss its plans at WWDC next June. In the meantime, rumors suggest a high-end helmet whose price would be around 3,000 dollars. It would benefit from a power equivalent to that of an M1 chip, the solution that equips the latest Macs. High definition screens and 6e wifi connectivity are also expected.

In addition to this high-end helmet, Apple would develop connected glasses. Apple Glass would be more affordable and should not see the light of day before 2023.
