AWS makes the leap to AMD EPYC with its Amazon EC2 C6a instances

Amazon Web Services, known as AWS for its acronym in English, has announced the availability of its new Amazon EC2 C6a instances, based on next generation AMD EPYC processors, which are optimized for high-performance computing, and offer superior value for money. Specifically, we talk about up to 15% more performance with the price of the previous generation instances.

With Amazon EC2 C6a instances it is possible to face a wide variety of workloads with all guarantees, including computationally intensive such as batch processing, distributed analytics, ad serving, highly scalable multiplayer gaming, and video encoding. As our regular readers will remember, AWS has already bet on AMD EPYC processors with the launch of EC2 Hpc6a instances.

Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager of Server Business at AMD, commented:

“AMD EPYC processors continue to provide a crucial solution for AWS customers who need access to powerful compute performance and cloud scalability for their workloads. Our expanding portfolio of next-generation solutions powered by 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors for AWS underscores the growing adoption of AMD technology in the cloud and we are excited to continue our work together.”

For his part, David Brown, Vice President of Amazon EC2 at AWS, said:

“Amazon EC2 C6a instances, powered by 3rd Generation AMD EPYC processors, continue our collaboration with AMD, providing customers with the ability to run compute-intensive workloads. C6a instances deliver on AWS’s history of offering the latest AMD EPYC processors while enabling the best price and performance for AWS customers.”

Before finishing I leave you a list with all the technical keys of these new instances:

  • High core density: with two large instance sizes, 128 vCPUs and 192 vCPUs, the largest with 284 GB of memory, twice the size of the largest C5a instances.
  • Always-on hardware security: encrypts main memory to help protect data in physical memory.
  • Compute-Centric Performance– Using the “Zen 3” core, C6a instances deliver up to 15% price improvement over the previous generation of C5a instances
  • Network / Bandwidth: C6a instances offer up to 50Gbps of network speed and 40Gbps of bandwidth to the Amazon Elastic Block Store, more than double that of C5a instances.
