Doctor Who: Ncuti Gatwa, Eric From Sex Education, Will Be The Series’ Next Doctor

The BBC announced on Sunday (8) the Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor of Doctor Who. Anyone familiar with the plot knows that every season a new protagonist takes on the role through a process of regeneration — part of the Time Lords’ life process.

Gatwa will be the fourteenth Doctor to assume the role in 2023, replacing Jodie Whittaker who is the current protagonist of the series. The actor became known after playing Eric Effiong in the comedy series Sex Education, shown by Netflix.

In the midst of his Doctor’s debut, he will also appear opposite Margot Robbie in the live-action Barbie, set to premiere in the United States on July 21, 2023.

The actor brings a new milestone to the series, being the first black man to play the protagonist and will continue a break from standards established in the previous season with Jodie, who was the first woman to take the position that was mostly filled by white men. .

“This role and show mean so much to many around the world, myself included, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,” the actor said in a statement to the BBC. “I will try my best to do the same.”

In keeping with storytelling tradition, Jodie will appear one last time in the same episode that will introduce Gatwa as the newest doctor.

The final episode is set to premiere in late 2022, coinciding with the British broadcaster’s 100th anniversary celebration. The teaser of this episode was released in mid-April by the BBCannouncing the end of the character’s existence.
