DuckDuckGo for Mac is still in beta, but you can try it now if you’re interested

It’s costing DuckDuckGo have their web browser ready for PC, but despite the slowness, they are making progress and when we are on the way to completing a year since its existence was known, macOS users can now install the beta version of it at will.

Summing up, the company specializing in privacy DuckDuckGo, known mainly for its search service, the most popular of the alternatives to the big ones, with its pluses and minuses, has been working for some time on the development of solutions that go beyond this and the most notable are the anti-tracking add-ons for web browsers and that, in the end, integrate said protections and use your browser to do so.

Well, after the search engine came the add-ons and after the add-ons, the browsers, like many others on the market, developers based on Chromium, the open source project sponsored by Google and used by other companies such as Brave, Opera or Microsoft to create their respective applications. DuckDuckGo, however, started its journey in reverse, releasing its own Chromium-based browser, first for iOS and Android.

The movement seemed to work out for them and, therefore, the next step was sung: make the leap from mobile to desktop, choosing macOS as the deployment platform. From the original announcement to the first beta for Mac, about six months passed, which is more or less what has happened until the one that concerns us, that of the DuckDuckGo open beta for Mac. In other words, everyone who wants to can install it.

In addition to the features that DuckDuckGo for Mac already offered, this development period has served to add others such as Duck Player, a kind of YouTube video player that blocks ads on videos that make use of profile data, that is, Google tracking technologies. In other words, it does not block advertising, but rather the one based on tracking the user’s habits, or that is how this function is explained, at least. We will have to see what Google thinks about it.

Other novelties of DuckDuckGo for Mac, according to TechCrunch, is precisely the improvement of tracker blocking -and that any user has at their fingertips regardless of the browser they use through the official DuckDuckGo extensions- and also the management of the horrific warnings for the use of cookies that as a result of the GDPR and to the displeasure of the user, the websites were forcibly implemented.

And more: DuckDuckGo for PC has recently added other features common among web browsers, such as the option to pin tabs; has also added a new bookmarks bar; and a more specific function, such as the Bitwarden open source password manager integration for the corresponding tasks. Also, the intention is to continue adding features to the browser, before its launch on other platforms, which seems to take longer than expected at first.

In the meantime, if you’re using macOS 10.15 or higher and feel like trying out DuckDuckGo, you can install it from this link. For Windows “it will arrive soon”, says the official site, although it has been doing so for months; and for Linux, neither is nor expected. We’ll see in the future.
