Dynabook laptops, security and resistance for hybrid work

The popularization of hybrid work has made laptops proliferate in companies. With them, your employees can easily carry their work tools with them when they go to work at home or in the office. But these continuous transfers mean that the computer can suffer more blows and problems of all kinds, which is avoided with equipment that has been designed with its reliability, resistance and security in mind. Dynabookas a good Toshiba heir, has taken this into account, and in addition to designing its laptops for greater reliability, has developed tests and services to ensure that the laptops it sells are safe and robust.

Thanks to this, this Japanese manufacturer, with decades of accumulated experience in the manufacture of laptops, has managed to manufacture equipment with a practically non-existent hardware failure rate. Indeed, according to the company’s products that are under warranty in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in 2021 this rate was only 0.17%.

Endurance tests for Dynabook Portégé and Tecra notebooks

Among the tests that Dynabook laptops have to pass to guarantee a high level of resistance and durability that allows the company to achieve equipment with as low a level of hardware failure as we have seen, there are several of a military nature. Specific, Portégé and Tecra families of notebooks have to pass military-grade tests established as such by the United States Army.

These tests are carried out following the MIL-STD 810 methodology, which focuses on establishing whether a computer has adequate operation and acceptable resistance, or, on the contrary, it is not suitable for sale because it does not meet the required resistance levels. . To do this, this methodology proposes various environmental tests for computers. Each of these tests is linked to a source of stress for the piece in relation to the environment in which it is located.

They are four: vibration, drop, sand and dust resistance, and resistance to extreme temperatures. The first of these tests, the vibration test, is carried out by vibrating the equipment with a three-axis vibration for a period of time greater than one hour. In drop tests, notebooks are dropped 26 times each from their faces, edges, and corners.

The sand and dust resistance test is carried out by exposing the equipment to blasts of both elements for six hours. Finally, the temperature resistance test is carried out by leaving them at temperatures ranging from 20 degrees below zero to sixty degrees Celsius. To do this, the equipment is subjected to three test cycles for two hours each time.

These tests may seem sufficient to prove the endurance of Dynabook notebooks. But the Japanese company does not seem enough. In addition to these tests he also makes them go through a HALT test. That is, it subjects them to a test in which it examines their highly accelerated lifespan (HALT). It is developed in-house by Dynabook, and passed by all of the company’s models.

During it, three years of use of the laptop are simulated and only the models and equipment that pass the test are put on sale. But in addition, this test is used by the company to check if a specific model has one or more points where it fails after a while. In this way, Dynabook designers can improve the design of that element or area and avoid its accelerated wear in the future.

Design and materials to increase its resistance

In addition to testing the endurance of its Portégé and Tecra notebooks, Dynabook also designs and builds them from the ground up to be stronger and more robust. For example, on some models you have opted for a magnesium alloy for its chassis. With it, laptops not only have greater external protection due to the resistance of said component, but their internal elements are also more protected.

This is just one of the advantages of using this alloy for computer chassis. The second is that thanks to its characteristics, the equipment with magnesium alloy in its chassis is very light. So much so that its weight is 40% less than that of laptops made of plastic or aluminum.

In addition, magnesium provides facilities when it comes to repairing this equipment, since it is easily welded. It also has a great capacity to absorb blows. This makes the equipment more resistant to falls and dents. But also to corrosion caused by the action of certain elements and the passage of time.

As if this were not enough, magnesium dissipates heat better, which results in greater protection for the internal components of the equipment. By having a chassis that dissipates heat better, they will not get as hot as other laptops, and therefore they will suffer less. The chassis will also heat up less when working with the computer, raising the level of comfort for its user.

In addition, several Dynabook models have a keyboard built to be splash free. Neither the keyboard nor the components below, which in other models can be damaged when there is a liquid spill by accident. These keyboards incorporate the Spill-resistant Keyboard system, characterized by the combination of various mechanisms that protect the equipment.

Among them, a double-sided insulation system, and a design that makes the surface of the keyboard more extensive than that occupied by the main circuit board of the keyboard. Aside from these measures, these keyboards also offer a curved layer of insulation located under the keyboard stand. Its function is to cover various areas of the equipment that would be exposed if the keyboard design were completely flat. And to complement all these protections and increase resistance against spills, between the layers of insulation is the double-sided insulation that we mentioned.

In short, the Dynabook laptops from the Portégé and Tecra ranges are designed not only so that taking the computer from home to the office or to a meeting is not burdensome. Also so that they are comfortable, and resist the passage of time, knocks and accidental liquid spills on the keyboard. Perfect for busy professionals on the go.
